🏆 💥 We are very pleased to announce that YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard), our social housing project in Kortrijk, Belgium, has been awarded the 2026 Casa de la Arquitectura Prize in Spain, an initiative of the Ministerio de la Vivienda y Agenda Urbana. The project received the award in the category ES_ADAPTABILIDAD, recognizing projects that reflect on new ways of living and on typological proposals responding to future societal challenges. Through an “urban acupuncture” approach, YIMBY aims to contribute to the regeneration of the neighbourhood. The project introduces housing models tailored to contemporary needs and evolving household structures, with special attention to those in society who require the greatest support: people living in loneliness, residents who are sufficiently autonomous yet still benefit from care and assistance, as well as elderly people and children. The “kangaroo homes” create opportunities for two households to share a plot, garden and winter hall, or for one family to live together with a semi-independent resident. At the scale of the neighbourhood, the project also contributes to urban renewal by restoring the relationship between the dwellings and the collective inner courtyard of the urban block. ✨ Our sincere thanks to @casadelaarquitectura , the jury (Iñaqui Carnicero, Federico Soriano, Pippo Ciorra, Bet Capdeferro, Marta Vall-llossera Ferran, María Teresa Verdú Martínez, Sara Leon Velasco and Nieves González San Millán) for recognizing this project. A special thank you as well to our clients @swplus_kortrijkwevelgem and the @stadkortrijk for their continuous support and belief in the project throughout the process, to the engineers @mouton_structureel_ontwerp and @boydens_engineering part of @sweco_belgium for their valuable collaboration, and to @artes_group for the construction of the project. Congratulations as well to the winners in the other categories! @viviendagob Photos: @stijn_bollaert #premioslacasadelaarquitectura2026 #regeneracionurbana #urbanregeneration #urbanacupuncture #circulareconomy

Practices in Research # 06 — RE-MEDIATING PRACTICES is now available. A LIVING LAB, is part of this issue alongside 17 other contributions from practices and researchers across Europe and beyond. It reflects on the design, development and implementation of circular renovation strategies. PiR is an initiative of In Practice, an interuniversity research group that places architectural practice at the heart of academic inquiry. This issue brings together offices and institutions exploring reuse, circularity, and the shifting role of the architect. Read the full journal at the link in bio. Urban infill project for social housing in Kortrijk A project by MAKER architecten The project explores how to intervene in a complex urban fabric without erasing its social and material history. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, it adopts an “acupunctural” strategy that revitalises the existing garden-city block along Tuighuisstraat in Kortrijk. Over time, private gardens connected to a shared green were replaced by garages and rear extensions, creating an asphalt belt and an isolated residual core. The project restores spatial and social connections by turning rear façades into new fronts and transforming the block interior into a collective meeting space. Participation and material reuse embed local memory in the design while strengthening safety and community life. Densification is achieved without land expansion. Of 54 plots, 18 belong to the public housing company; seven are consolidated into three volumes, increasing the number of units from 16 to 31. A mix of housing typologies and collective ground-floor spaces supports inclusive living and everyday encounters. Responding to demographic change and new family models, the project introduces adaptable “kangaroo housing” units. Flexible layouts accommodate intergenerational living, blended families, and hybrid work-home arrangements, allowing homes to expand or contract over time and promoting long-term social resilience. Circular construction is central to the approach. Original bricks and roof tiles, over 100 years old, were reused on site. Salvaged materials were tested; non-structural bricks were repurposed in gabions as boundaries in collaboration with a sheltered workshop. A hybrid mortar ensures future disassembly and reuse, reinforcing resource efficiency and long-term sustainability. @makerarchitecten Credits Author(s): MAKER Architecten Year: 2025 Typology: Social housing Location: Kortrijk, Belgium Structural engineer: Mouton @mouton_structureel_ontwerp MEP engineer: boydens engineering @boydens_engineering SWECO @sweco_belgium Contractor: Artes Group @artes_group Client: SW+ @swplus_kortrijkwevelgem Ph. credits: Stijn Bollaert @stijn_bollaert #newgens #opencall #architectureforchange

For the ‘Living together’ category of the BRICK AWARD 26—focused on urban residential developments—the shortlist asks a profoundly human question: how do we design for true social collectivity? Housing is more than just infrastructure; it is an inalienable human right and the foundation of community. Addressing the global urgency for space and dignity in communal living, the shortlisted projects foreground an architecture of care and repair. The resulting enquiry reveals a powerful truth: material ethics are more than the resources we use, transcending to how we choose to live together—forming resilient new communities without ever altering the individual. Careful renovation of a historic apartment in the heart of Ghent. A compact service core organises the layout and allows the space to shift between openness and privacy. By opening or closing parts of this element, the apartment adapts to different ways of using the space — enabling flexible contemporary living within a heritage context. The contrast between old and new creates a quiet dialogue between history and modern life. Warm materials and refined detailing preserve the character of the space while preparing it for the future. On-site materials shaped this social and urban infill project’s character in Kortrijk. Bricks and roof tiles were reused, with lower-grade pieces forming gabions for plot boundaries. Each layer of the façade follows what was available, creating a direct link between material economy and design expression.
