10 Years later, Amanda Levete returns to MAAT.
We are delighted to welcome world-renowned UK architect Amanda Levete, RIBA Stirling Prize winner and lead architect of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology @maatmuseum in Lisbon, for a keynote lecture marking the 10th anniversary of the building's opening. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A and a guided tour.
Organised by RIBA Europe in partnership with MAAT, Amanda's keynote will explore MAAT within the wider context of the city, making it a compelling European case study for contemporary architectural practice.
"Through the design of MAAT, we set out to re-establish the connection between city and river. Ten years on, seeing the different ways people use and enjoy the public space we created on the roof of the museum is, to me, a measure of its success." – Amanda Levete

– Amanda Levete.

Development in Saudi Arabia is happening on a scale - and at a speed - that few places in the world can match. From the gigaprojects reshaping entire regions to the vast infrastructure and private-sector housing programmes redefining cities, the Kingdom presents architects with both extraordinary challenges and rare opportunities.
These themes took centre stage at 'The Big Picture', a panel discussion hosted by RIBA in partnership with the Department for Business and Trade and the Saudi British Joint Business Council, and generously hosted at @buro_happold Riyadh office. We had a packed house, with 130 guests, including the RIBA delegation attending #CityscapeGlobal2025 and representatives of the 500-strong RIBA Gulf chapter.
Discussion revealed a more nuanced picture of development in KSA than can be apparent from the outside. Projects that appear to move quickly from announcement to site might often move through several rounds of design and redesign to test propositions. The scale of projects also means that design might continue once construction is underway, requiring responsive, nimble design teams.
Panellists talked about the growing importance of multi-disciplinary partnerships in the kingdom, and of how they have incorporated requirements for greater focus on local content – from materials to the composition of design teams. And as they concluded, architects working in Saudi Arabia may be adapting to unique circumstances, but the ambitions driving it offers lessons for the world beyond.
The takeaway? While Saudi Arabia’s architectural landscape is shaped by unique circumstances, the ambition behind it offers lessons for the global profession: how to innovate at scale, partner effectively, and design for transformative change.
