Folk & American primitive trio Magic Tuber Stringband @magictuberstringband has announced the new album Heavy Water, out May 22nd on @thrilljockey Magic Tuber Stringband is Courtney Werner, Evan Morgan, and Mike Devito, and Heavy Water pays tribute to the loss of community and untold ecological fallout that comes with invasive, disruptive legacies of nuclear production in rural landscapes. Hear the first single, "Tribute to the Angels", titled after a poem by Hilda Doolittle (H.D.). Heavy Water is available for pre-order on CD and turquoise vinyl, which include photos and liner notes from the band. Highly skilled players and writers, the trio leads the burgeoning avant composition world utilizing folk instrumentation. Their music appears to weave in and out of the fabric of their surroundings, reflecting their time spent living across the Southeast and studying its regional folk traditions and natural histories. Having performed recently at Big Ears, Hopscotch, Sound & Gravity (and many other places along the way) the group’s music resonates well beyond their regional roots. Their newest record, Heavy Water, will be out May 22 on the venerable Thrill Jockey Records. The ensemble continues to stretch the parameters of acoustic instrumental expression with masterful flourishes of dense, textural arrangements, subtle minimalist gestures and deft improvisation. You'll have to see it to believe it, but here's an idea of what to expect: "Time According to Sweet Wreath" (duration, 30-40 min.) An expanded cinema presentation by Jasper Lee which is part film screening, part slideshow talk, part live sound collage. This lyrical fusion of super8 films, photographs, folk lingo and soundscapes from the Sweet Wreath archive offers a poetics of memory, media, magic and time...A deep dive into the mythopoetic world of Sweet Wreath. Magic Tuber Stringband have released their new track "Where the Place Becomes Forgetting" from their upcoming album Heavy Water. This track features sounds recorded from the edge of the Savannah River Site in Georgia, where Magic Tuber Stringband's fiddle player Courtney conducted research on the long-lasting effects of heavy metals and radioactive byproducts from the production of weapons-grade plutonium on the area's wildlife. Heavy Water explores this degradation and exploitation that permeates the many areas like the Savannah River Site, evoking destruction as well as resilience.
