In this talk, artist and researcher Wesley Goatley will present the multiple crises of language at the heart of AI, but also the radically new avenues for creativity that the intersection of natural language and machine code opens up.  The talk will combine critical dives into the politics of AI and language today, as well as examples from his own practice of where open source AI tools can create spaces for worldbuilding, speculative design, and low-carbon post-abundance computational arts. Science Fiction as Method: Imagining Communication Differently Maggie Roberts @maggie_mer has explored the boundaries of machine and human vision throughout her artistic career, mostly as the collaborative artist 0rphan Drift (which she co-founded in London with Ranu Mukherjee in 1994). In this talk, she will present recent projects that consider Artificial Intelligence through the somatic tendencies of the octopus - as a distributed, many-minded consciousness. 0rphan Drift’s If AI Were Cephalopod at Telematic Gallery San Francisco, her IMT Gallery Becoming Octopus Meditations, and the current 0rphan Drift 9 Brains project, suggest possibilities in expanding and inhabiting other systems of perception and proprioception and navigate what it means to communicate with an alien intelligence, addressing human exceptionalism’s limited understanding of ourselves in relation to other kinds of life. 0rphan Drift has been recently partnered by the Serpentine Gallery’s Creative Ai Lab and their installations, performances and speculative fictions have been exhibited nationally and internationally in gallery and museum spaces for over three decades. Recent exhibitions include Sheer Presence, IMT Gallery London; Assume Form, Bard USA; May the Other Live in Me, Laboratoria Art Science; Still I Rise: Gender, Feminisms and Resistance, Nottingham Contemporary, De La Warr Pavilion and Arnolfini, UK; Matter Fictions, Berardo Museum Lisbon; Speculative Frictions at PDX Contemporary Portland Or; Eat Code and Die at Lomex Gallery NY and published in Fiction as Method; Fictioning, The Myth-Functions of Contemporary Art and Philosophy and Aqueous Humours Fluid Ground; and interview in Interalia magazine, 2023. Transcript and diagrams from my lecture Deep Objects, Item Literature, and the Refusal to Image at UAL London College of Communication are now online. The talk was part of Machinic Language, a symposium series by MA Interaction Design exploring language as code, interface, and infrastructure. I was invited to speak about SIAHKAL_2.0.EXE (Becoming Press @becoming.press ), and used the occasion to cut into the world-building around it. Basically, less presentation, more surgery. Full transcript + diagrams; link in bio and here: /ualmachinic-language-symposium Special thanks to UAL lecturers Maria Dada @msmariadada and Mariana Marangoni @msmrgni and the wider team at UAL London College of Communication @ma_interaction_design who organised and curated the symposium.

Machinic Languages Symposium - Parham Galamdar Deep Objects, Item Literature, and the Refusal to Image This lecture unfolds through a sequence of speculative propositions that track the breakdown of image-making, language, and authorship under ecological, political, and computational pressures—and asks what practices remain once these systems collapse. Moving from the desiccation of the Tigris and Euphrates to the impossibility of painting and image-making, I stage a theory-fiction performance in six parts. Through the screening of short films, AI-generated texts, and reflections on Islamic martyrdom, anti-colonial grief, and post-literary genre, the talk reframes creativity as a practice of subtraction. It introduces the concept of “item literature”—books written by AI to be read by AI—and positions the studio not as a site of production, but of ethical refusal and mourning. Part of Machinic Language, this lecture addresses what kind of meaning might still be possible after the future has ended. Link in bio

The Origin of the Word: Language, Lineage, Lovers and Logins: This artist talk treats language as both body and interface: a lived system of sensation, classification, and access. Moving between code, performance, and participation, Melanie Hoff shares works that remake machinic language as an embodied, communal practice, from Dance Poem Revolution (poems generated through movement) to Consensual Hacking (protocols of permission and pleasure), alongside Partisan Thesaurus, Recursynonym, and Folder Poetry. Together these projects ask how machinic language systems do not just describe the world; they help produce it, granting lineage, mapping desire, and regulating legibility. The talk considers ways to rewrite the languages that write us. Link in bio.

MAKING-WITH What if there was no wind? What would you ask at a seance for discarded technologies? What more-than-human prophecies might we receive today? Private View: 6th March 6pm - 9pm [ RSVP via link in bio! ] Show Open: 7-9th March 11am - 6pm _ Making-with is a series of discontiguous narratives coming together to tell a greater story of what it is to be more-than-human. This year’s MA Interaction Design cohort at London College of Communication evaluates the ways in which art and design practices of today shape the storytelling of the future through multiple forms, from speculative narratives and filmmaking, to practical workshops and investigations of planetary computation. By engaging with these new systems of thinking, audiences have the opportunity to explore the embodiment of crisis and survival, of decay and regeneration. Making-with invites us to contemplate how we use resources, how we create with others, machines and the environment, and what it means to be a part of a sympoietic system. _ Science Gallery London King’s College London, Guy’s Campus Great Maze Pond London SE1 9GU See you there!
