𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 is a skewed desk made of black walnut with a book on it. The spine of the book says the 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘋𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴, but the actual interior of the book is Henry David Thoreau’s 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 (1854). The pages inside are also skewed 40 degrees. Douglass and Thoreau were born in 1818 and 1817, respectively. Both were self-made men, but with very different life experiences.
—Hugh Hayden with Emily Watlington, @artinamerica 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 is an artist book by Hugh Hayden, on view in his 2024 solo exhibition 𝘏𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴 at @lisson_gallery in New York. Collaborating closely and drawing on Hayden’s conceptual framework, I designed the book with both the interior and cover based on first editions, Thoreau’s 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 for the interior and Douglass’s autobiography for the cover, drawing on archival research for both. All cover artwork and spine typography were redrawn from scratch. Every element of the book—covers, endpapers, and interior pages—was then manually skewed at 40 degrees, one by one, producing the sculptural object on display. Subway Color Archive Eighth Avenue Line Poster Edition Accompanying the SCA book is a poster edition of the publication. During the research process, paint chips were collected from the platforms, dissected, and examined for chroma, thickness, and texture. Seven unique color phases emerged. Each progressive column reveals a new portal to the layer below. Posters and books are available for request via subway-color-archive.com. Perspecta 56: Not Found The Yale Architectural Journal “Architecture is the perfect form of camouflage. As buildings recede into the background of everyday life, the myriad forces that shape our natural, social, and political landscapes hide in plain sight. Embedded within the spatial and material organizations of the built environment are ideas of value, hierarchy, and control that tilt the ground and influence perception in the name of endless competing interests.” Using transparent varnish, elements of the book—such as titles, bylines, and image frames—are concealed, becoming hyper-visible in the reflection of light. Throughout the book, image separations in black and metallic silver ink combine and deconstruct in various configurations.
