And we’re off! @firedcornwall at beautiful Tregenna Castle, we are here until 4pm, do come and visit us if you are near St Ives. There are so many wonderful potters here including @theleachpottery@lauracrosland@bullshedpottery@katwheeler_ceramics@jacquelineclarkceramics and many more, and the organisers themselves who are great potters too. There are demonstrations, sunny gardens, and lovely colleagues from the Leach are inviting you to add to a tower of pinch teabowls! I am so happy to be part of things, thank you to Helen, Steph and Theresa for the exemplary organising and for letting me join in!

This evening I’ve been working in the shed, which has been newly painted by @guyrutterpaint 🙌 putting handles on a few mugs in the dusk. They’ll dry nicely indoors on the shelf and will be reduction fired in the gas kiln, probably with a tan-creamy shino glaze. It’s been a busy day teaching at the Leach Pottery with a fabulous group I’m very fond of, and finishing work for lovely fairs coming up @potfest.co.uk@celebratingceramics@firedcornwall hope to see you there! ✨

I’ve just unloaded the kiln at the end of a sunny Saturday, ready for a delivery @theleachpottery where these have been requested and all I can say is this is a ‘Good Day Sunshine’! So pleased with them. Hope you’ve had a small success today too 💛

Some forms I like.
I’m trying to keep track of things and at the moment I’m in ‘revisiting/reflection’ phase so, largely for a couple of lovely potential new orders, I’ve created a catalogue (which you can see on my website) of my favourite and standard forms and glazes, measurements and prices. And these are some of the pots that I’d like to think could be good examples. It’s that process of gathering, thinking, editing, refining, trying to say ‘no’ if something doesn’t quite work (like the green bottle on the left). Saying ‘yes’ to things that are undeniably simple but that do work. Putting other things away into boxes for a bit.
It’s all procrastination, obviously. I should be making cups for @potfest.co.uk Compton Verney. Pretty soon I’ll be wishing I had done them. These forms will certainly be there however; hopefully cups too.

I’ve been away for a little while but today I am back in my happy place, at the wheel, making bowls, so I just thought I’d say hello 👋🏻. I hope you have had some happiness today on this sunny Sunday 🩶
These are for @theleachpottery where I’ll be stocking up soon ❤️🙏

Lovely clay, I love you so much. It’s been an unusual time of late with some people dear to me needing a little extra care and so I’ve relocated my studio temporarily and have been sharing a workshop with my dad. I don’t know, perhaps it seems a bit selfish to do my own work while I’m supposed to be helping others but in fact it has been so, so important. I’ve carved out a little space, and have been making just ten pots a day - much less than I usually aim for - and sticking to the same form, my tapered milk jug, that I’ve made for many years. It’s quiet, unconscious work, using muscle memory. Time to gather myself and, for a few minutes, switch off the part of my brain that worries. Ten fresh pots a day plus ten handles on yesterday’s pots have been a small oasis in my day, each and every day, like a meditation or a few breaths, before getting back to all the other important things that are to be done in life. What could be more therapeutic or more calming, in the middle of strange times. Clay, I love you. Thank you 🩶

Pots are still proliferating … you may notice my backdrops are a little different of late. I’ve been taking some time out to hang out with my lovely mum and dad and their garden is so beautiful. I am surrounded by wrens, blue tits, a pair of great tits and blackbirds, yesterday I saw a jay and a pair of green woodpeckers (yaffles, thanks for that @steveduffyartist ) and a robin creeps into my dad’s workshop where I am currently temporarily working, to keep me company. The blackthorn blossom is marching down their garden interspersed with all sorts of beautiful trees: damson, hazelnut, walnut. And the pots are still coming. So here are some. Firing them will be another matter but I’ll report back when we cross that bridge 🩶
Small rituals; tea for one or two 🩶
I love making and using these pieces. The speckle and the quiet warm grey; surface like a birds egg and the pot and cup warm to hold.
Happy Spring Saturday to you

Very excited to be here @hepworthwakefield all set up and looking forward to welcome you! It’s a beautiful show with some great work! I’d love you to come and see my recent reduction fired work and the combination of that with my palette of electric fired bowls and jugs 🩶💛🤎

I am very excited about these small porcelain ‘Tondos’ which have just come out of the kiln, along with some other similar forms in different clays and glazes, which I will be showing this weekend @hepworthwakefield Ceramics Fair. Hopefully these marry form and function; I love the sculptural aspect but suggest these could be used for small dishes at the table, such as salt or sauces, or for small treasures such as jewellery as well, and the glaze, glowing inside the bowls, is hopefully quite pleasing. I will show you more of these as I set up my table at the Hepworth Wakefield fair, and I hope you can come to see them and pick them up and feel the textures of the unglazed clay outside and the glossy delicate celadon glaze pooling inside.

I hope you will join me @hepworthwakefield this weekend where I am thrilled to have been selected for their beautiful Ceramics Fair, timed to coincide with the @edmunddewaal curated exhibition Playing with Fire: Edmund de Waal and Axel Salto; I can’t wait to see it. I thought I would show you some of my new work here; I’ve been developing some jug forms and I’m so pleased with them. For many years I’ve been making the tapered forms you see here in the yellow, but recently I’ve been drawn to the more open, slightly bellied forms you see here in the flared water jug, milk jug and pourer in tenmoku and shino glazes. When I first made them I thought they were quite radical and now they make complete sense to me as part of my collection. The kilns are cooling today so there will be a new set of pots to bring as well as some of these and I hope you love them. I really look forward to seeing you there and catching up with some amazing friends who also have their work at the fair: @birgitpots who will bring her utterly luscious porcelain pears and other pieces; @pottery_west whose fine throwing is simply a joy to see and hold; @ooak_creation who has done some beautiful and complex work on ash glazes to find out about; @rosabond whose delicate flower bricks are lovely examples of slip work. There are many more I am looking forward to meeting there including scrumptious handmade ice cream by @fennells.co served on dishes by @carla_murdoch_ceramics . There will be sunshine. And, of course, the utter joy of Barbara Hepworth✨ Do come, we will be open from 10-5pm on Saturday and Sunday 21-22nd March.

And we’re off again! Our last day at beautiful @townergallery Eastbourne for the ceramics fair; thank you so much to Hannah and Luka for the impeccable curation and organisation and to my fabulous neighbours @steveduffyartist and @705xclay for being the best fair companions. Do come and see us, we are here until 4pm and the ☀️ is still out, despite expectations.
