I turn 50 this month, it’s not of any significance really as I don’t celebrate the years, but truth is I’m a better woodworker now than I was a year ago, and I like to think there’s no reason why that improvement shouldn’t continue… I want to still be doing this in my 80’s -like Sam Maloof and other notable furniture makers, if your eyesight & health allows, why stop? Unlike sports where you have a window of activity, this is a lifelong passion.
One enduring and appealing aspect of woodworking is the endless possibilities, every year there are new ideas to try, skills to learn and boundaries to push.
Every new project we take on is in some way more adventurous than the last…
And there’s still so much to learn.
In that sense I’m still very much an amateur woodworker.
So 50 bring it on -what interesting projects will this year bring?

A working kitchen flooded with natural light.
It was a very overcast day when @samgradyphotography came to shoot the Regency kitchen project, but with those high ceilings and huge windows this room always feels bright and spacious.

Dering Studio is the workshop of Ben Wheeler, who designs and makes furniture with a focus on handcrafted solid wood. He utilises traditional colouring techniques like ebonising and fuming to emphasise the natural beauty of the timber and his work is often influenced by the greats of mid-century design.
Ben, along with his apprentice Myles, makes everything from scratch, from small everyday items like whittled coffee scoops up to fully working tambour door kitchens. His handmade kitchens reflect his love of real wood and furniture making.

They take time, so don’t hide them -show them off. Sure their primary function is structural, but they’re beautiful too -a sign to all that something is properly made, and handmade not by machine -that adds value. They’re irregular, imperfect, you can see the feint scribe marks of the maker -but that’s beautiful too.
Thankfully there’s a huge resurgence in appreciating handmade things -and these little joints and details are the things people comment on, they want to see them on the pieces they commission.
I’ve cut plenty over the years but it still puts a smile on my face when I open a drawer and see a hand-cut dovetail.

People often say to me that they want a certain piece of furniture to match the existing wood colour of their home, so everything matches.
I don’t really understand that personally, wood is so beautifully varied in grain pattern, texture and colour that it should all be celebrated. Different finishes suit certain woods better than others, and certain colours complement certain shapes better than others.
Maybe I’m just a fan of wood but I feel it all needs exploring.
I don’t see a problem with the different wood tones in the picture above sharing the same space…

Our mirror design is 5yrs old now, every year we add a new finish …but this year there’s two new finishes.
Myles has mixed his own dye and come up with ‘Judd Red’ a nod to Donald Judd and his primary colour furniture of the 60’s. He’s perfected the mix now and the colour really pops!
The other new finish is a Danish white lye that we’ve sealed with a neutral matte oil -the result looks very modern, we’re calling it Scandi White for now.
As always these finishes are best seen in person -we’ll be bringing both to the @water.lane Spring Fair 2nd & 3rd May, hopefully we’ll see you there.

Who needs one of these in their kitchen?
An awkward space between two doorways turned out to be a positive in the end.
We made this bespoke cupboard to fill the corner, it has a drinks cabinet in the top half, an oak door rack for the mixers and a marble shelf for prep.
Working with an awkward space is always a challenge but when you finally think of something that will work in the space occasionally these areas turn out to be the highlights of the project.
