🔗 “This idea of thinking about machines as not alive, and humans as alive, is so limited” Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev is a world-renowned art historian and curator who has championed a vision of the interconnectedness of art, science, philosophy and technology, as well as the healing potentials in art. She served as Chief Curator at MoMA/P.S.1 (1999-2001) and, from 2002, she was Chief Curator of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Turin. After first meeting them for “Muted Explosions”, their solo exhibition during Loop Festival 2024 (at @museumusicabcn , curated by @einaidea ) we went to Madrid to catch up with Rōman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk. They told us everything about “Pedagogies of War”, their new exhibition at @tba_21 curated by @the_chus_martinez . The show reflects on shifting perspective on war imagery and takes a guess on what it feels to observe war “at distance”. We met Rōman and Yarema to ask them about the films, their collaboration with Chus, and the inspirations behind the exhibition design of the show. The show stays open until 21 June 2026. Make sure not to miss it!

Loop Spotlight On: Marianna Simnett 🪄 We’re back with our Loop Spotlight On capsule interviews, where we present artists from the Loop community and ask them insights about their relationship with film, next projects and what they’ve been into lately. This time, we’re excited to feature artist @mariannasimnett , who was born in London and lives in New York and Berlin. Simnett presented her film “Blue Moon” together with @societeberlin at Loop Fair 2022. The film features a glitching female figure that continuously morphs in the style of early AI models, here trained on footage of Simnett playing the flute. The work sits within the artist’s broader trajectory focused on the exploration of the ‘monstrous’, fairytale-like worlds and exchanges between human and non-human species, often imagining the body as a site of transformation. Works featured: 1. Blue Moon (video still), 2022 2. The Severed Tail, 2022 3. Headless #1, 2025. Photo: Thomas Müller 4. Catherine Wheel, 2026, installation view Circus, Secession 2026. Photo: Sophie Pölzl 5. Portrait of the artist with Prayers for Roadkill (Unicorn), 2022. 🔗 Do we leave it all in the hands of the Elon Musks? #LoopSymposium Alistair Hudson (@zkmdirektor ) is the Scientific-Artistic Chairman of the ZKM | Karlsruhe, the german art centre dedicated to art and technology. Before, he was on the juries for the Turner Prize, Artes Mundi Prize and a member of the selection committee for the British pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2021. His methods focus on the relationships between culture, society, politics and technical progress. He was invited to Loop Symposium 2025, curated by Artistic Director Filipa Ramos, for the panel “Virtual Trust”, where he explained how art can help subvert the privatized, monopolized technological landscape through artistic practices – like the one of @__katecrawford__ and Vladan Joler – that critically reflect upon it and imagine new ways of reappropriating it. 🔗 Who retains the right of the work? @barbaracueto is an independent curator, writer, and researcher based in Berlin. She has curated projects at institutions like LAS Art Foundation (@las_artfoundation ) KANAL Pompidou (@kanal.centrepompidou ), Fundación La Caixa (@fundlacaixa ) and many more. Her work focuses on the intersection of contemporary art, digital culture and the politics of emerging technologies, with a particular interest in new forms of authorship in the digital ecosystem. She was invited to Loop Symposium 2025, curated by Loop Artistic Director Filipa Ramos (@filipaaaaaaaaaaa ), for the panel “Virtual Trust”: during her presentation, she explained the key points of her research and illustrated situations where the boundaries of authorship blur, giving rise to new forms of thought that diverge from the way we commonly understand copyright and creation. This post is to celebrate our long lasting collaboration with Cnap – Le Centre national des arts plastiques, Paris 🌷 Here we present the film cycle, curated by Pascale Cassagnau, 𝓒𝓸𝓶𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓽 ç𝓪 𝓿𝓪? 𝓓’𝓪𝓹𝓻è𝓼 𝓖𝓸𝓭𝓪𝓻𝓭 — 𝓐𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓖𝓸𝓭𝓪𝓻𝓭 (2014–ongoing): Cnap and Loop created it in 2014, and it has taken place every year since at Loop Festival. Inspired by the 1976 film by Jean-Luc Godard — a reflection on the malleability of truth in storytelling — the works presented are connected by a red thread: an interest in questioning what truth means in filmic and narrative representation. Across the years, we presented films from Morocco, Portugal, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Colombia and more. Here’s a selection to add to your watchlist! thank you @zumzeigcoop for hosting our program! 🔗“Monuments are places where history can be challenged and transformed” Andrea Lissoni, Artistic Director of Haus der Kunst in Munich is a long-time friend and collaborator of Loop Barcelona. He was invited to the Loop Symposium 2025 “Trusting, Caring, Collaborating”, curated by Filipa Ramos, to share his thoughts on the meaning of monuments and what they stand for in contemporary times. The talk resonated with the theme of the panel “Ons and Offs: Exhibitions, Biennials, Festival”, about how these environments create infrastructures and deal with the circulation of artists’ films. Haus der Kunst’s current exhibition “Cyprien Gaillard. Wassermusik”, open until 22nd March, reflects on the same idea: reimagining the meaning of monuments that have lost their original purposes, exploring how these public sites can generate new significance and collective experience. Don’t miss the exhibition at @haus_der_kunst , and stay alert for more info about the programme and speakers at Loop Symposium 2026! 🌀

Loop Barcelona 2026 Loop Fair 17–19 Nov. Loop Festival 10–21 Nov. Loop Symposium 18–19 Nov. Mark your calendars! In November 2026, the annual event dedicated to artists’ cinema will take place once again. This year’s theme, designated by @loopbarcelona_festival Artistic Director Filipa Ramos (@filipaaaaaaaaaaaa ) is Xiu Xiu (“Whispers” in Catalan) 🌬️ In 2026, as Barcelona becomes the World Capital of Architecture, Loop Festival proposes an edition titled Xiu Xiu (Whispers) which celebrates the city as a host to a multiplicity of life forms, who share rhythms and tones with us. Xiu Xiu focuses on the spaces—domestic, public, infrastructural, marginal—where these relations become most tangible. From the microarchitectures that support nonhuman life to the unplanned ways in which animals, plants, materials and atmospheres inhabit the city, the program invites audiences to attune to Barcelona’s quieter, often overlooked forms of living 🌱 Stay tuned to find out the participating artists at Loop Barcelona 2026: Xiu Xiu (Whispers). We look forward to welcoming you. Us esperem!

🏃‍♀️ Loop Goes to… ARCOmadrid 🔗 Once again, Loop visited Spain’s biggest art fair, @feriaarco , to explore the role of artists’ films in the art market. What challenges come with presenting moving image works in a fair environment? How do galleries deal with screens, sound, and headphones inside a booth? We asked gallerists and artists for their perspectives: @galeriazielinsky , @islaflotante.galeria , @the_ryder_projects , @luisadelantadovlc and @houseofchappaz shared their reflections. In our series “Loop Goes to…”, we visit art gatherings to spotlight artists’ films, speaking closely with the people who create and nurture the art scene around the world. @nani_pieceofcake @patilarahoces @olgaadelantadoalvarez @eli.cortinas Featuring films by Cachito Vallés (@cachitovalles ), Roberto Jacoby (@jacobyroberto ), Claudia Pagès (@claudiapagesrabal , @travesiacuatro ), Ali Kazma (@kazma.ali , @galeriafranciscofino ), Ana Esteve Reig (@anitaestevereig ), Clemencia Echeverri (@clemencia.echeverri , @rolf_art ), Roman Khimei & Yarema Malashchuk (@yaremaandkhimei , @galeriepoggi ), Petra Cortright (@petra_cortright , @societeberlin ), Pedro Torres (@pedrooootorres ), Eli Cortiñas (@eli.cortinas ), and Jenny Holzer (@jennyholzerstudio , @studio.trisorio ).

In 2025 we experimented with a new format: a space of exchange called Loop Commoning Network 🫂🌱🕸️ We presented an open call for professionals working at the intersection of art and cinema to present projects at any stage of development and production, and organized a rotating system of focused conversations and roundtables, (each lasting around 10-15 minutes) designed to encourage fluid and informal encounters. Rather than a market, we think about Commoning Network as a way to inspire networking and mutual learning. A museum director seeking to extend a project’s life, an artist in search of commissioning partners, or a producer exploring new models of co-ownership: all find a place where to share experiences and seek common ground. Stay tuned to know more about Loop Commoning Network and how to apply in 2026!
