Two months ago, I had the joy of hosting three cyanotype workshops at the B-You Aktivplatz in Altona.
A huge thank you to all the wonderful people who joined, to Kat from B-You (@gwastpauli ) for sharing this beautiful space, and to Freundeskreis des Hauses der Photographie @freundeskreisphotographie for making the project possible through their support.
Im Rahmen meines künstlerischen Projekts COLOR CODE lade ich TIAN* und queere Menschen in Hamburg zu kostenlosen Cyanotypie-Workshops im B-You Aktivplatz in Hamburg Altona ein.
Gemeinsam gestalten wir Stoffe mit der analogen Fototechnik der Cyanotypie—mit persönlichen Symbolen, Objekten oder Worten. Aus den einzelnen Arbeiten entsteht eine kollektive Flagge, die im öffentlichen Raum gehisst wird.
Was würdest du auf eine queere Flagge bringen, damit sie auch deine Geschichte erzählt?
Die Workshops finden an drei Tagen statt: 17., 23. und 24. August jeweils von 10–17 Uhr. Du kannst dich für einen der Termine anmelden.
Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich.

As part of my artistic project COLOR CODE, I warmly invite TIAN* and queer people in Hamburg to join cyanotype workshops at B-You Aktivplatz in Hamburg-Altona.
Together, we’ll create fabric artworks using the analog photographic technique of cyanotype – with symbols, objects, or words that are meaningful to you.
All individual pieces will come together to form a large collective flag, which we’ll raise in a public space.
What would you put on a queer flag so that it also tells your story?
The workshops will take place on the following days:
August 17th, 23rd, and 24th each starting from 10am to 5pm.

Pop-up by the photography class from HFBK Hamburg centers around a shared object: a standardized aluminum frame (50 × 70 cm, with glass), available in multiple identical copies. These frames were given to the class as a gift – a simple gesture that sparked the idea for this collective project. Each artistic position is invited to engage with the frame – not merely as a container for an image, but as a conceptual and material point of departure.
The project questions the conventions of photographic and artistic display and explores the frame as object, as border, as medium, and as metaphor. Through a collective conceptual approach, each work opens up a self-referential dialogue with the act of exhibiting itself. The process plays a central role. Rather than presenting finalized works, the project embraces the unfinished, the provisional, and the shifting nature of artistic production. The logistical and physical movement of the frames becomes part of the narrative too – working, transporting, installing, and reflecting are understood as intertwined steps in an open process.
Receiving the frames – and responding to them – becomes part of the story. What begins as a gift turns into an invitation.

LIOBA KAPPEL „COLOR CODE“
Lioba Kappel, die weitere Gewinnerin der HEARTBEAT PHOTO-Projektförderung, bewegt sich mit ihrem Projekt „Color Code“ an der Schnittstelle zwischen Fotografie und Gemeinschaft und setzt sich darin mit queerer Repräsentation auseinander. Mit ihren Cyanotypie-Workshops möchte sie das traditionelle Verfahren neu beleben und der Frage nachgehen, wie sich queere Gemeinschaft nicht nur darstellen, sondern durch künstlerische Praxis erfahrbar machen lässt. Sie ist Künstlerin und Porträtfotografin und studiert im Master Fotografie an der HFBK Hamburg.
Wir gratulieren Lioba zu ihrer großartigen Projektidee und freuen uns darauf, sie bei der Umsetzung zu begleiten!

Startschuss für Alexander Hagmann und Lioba Kappel zur Projektförderung
Die Jury hat entschieden! Wir haben zum zweiten Mal die Projektförderung HEARTBEAT PHOTO zur Stärkung und Vernetzung der Fotoszene und ihrer Akteur:innen in Hamburg vergeben. Die Fachjury hat zwei partizipative Konzepte von Alexander Hagmann und Lioba Kappel aus den zahlreichen Bewerbungen ausgewählt. Sie sollen 2025 realisiert werden. Die beiden Gewinner:innen erhalten eine finanzielle Förderung für die Projektrealisierung in Höhe von 4.500 Euro sowie öffentlichkeitswirksame Maßnahmen zur Begleitung ihrer Projekte vom Freundeskreis Photographie. HEARTBEAT PHOTO wird durch die Behörde für Kultur und Medien unterstützt.
Wir gratulieren beiden von ganzem Herzen und freuen uns auf die Umsetzung ihrer Ideen. In den kommenden Tagen stellen wir sie euch mit ihren Projekten genauer vor. Seid gespannt!

We are pleased to present the project «pose session» by photoclass student (MFA) Lioba Kappel @liobaba . In November 2024, this project was featured in the Hiscox Art Prize exhibition held at ICAT HFBK Hamburg. The exhibition showcased works by twelve outstanding students nominated by HFBK professors, and their projects were presented to an external jury.

Who are you, truly, when I fix you within my gaze? And what right do I have to determine how you will be seen? Maybe every portrait is just a game of control, a back-and-forth, where neither of us gets out clean. You’re never just you in front of the lens. You’re what you think you are, what you wish to be, and what I end up capturing despite it all.
The work series “pose sessions” focuses on the image of a young man who is repeatedly photographed by the artist. The pose, a space between truth and imagination, captures the changing dynamics of this relationship. What unfolds is not a clear narrative, but an exploration of the act of seeing itself.
