I´m so exited to share this project! These past 2 weeks with my all‑time teenage best mate Lilly Williams we´re making the first moves for a book together. Its a super‑personal passion project, and we have been laughing loads and crying too! The story starts when a theatre‑maker returns home for her grandfather’s funeral and stumbles upon an archive of notated movement diagrams. She realises a massive disconnect with her family’s tradition, and at the same time that she’s been heavily influenced by a mustached guru, a philosophy, and a super‑niche spiritual practice that’s essentially secret to the rest of the world. Through shifting scenes — imagined dialogues, dream sequences, failed rehearsals, awkward family encounters and intergenerational heartache — the story circles questions of inheritance, exclusion, and the risks of making art out of what is very personal. We’re looking at identity and belonging in the age of individualism, and how to tell a story about the kind of quiet magic that has been happening in our families for decades. And yes, there will be a slugg cult watching from the garden… Thanks the @theherduk for hosting our writing residency! It stands as both an artwork and an ethical document—one that reimagines pregnancy not as a condition to be managed but as a story to be shared.’ Pregnancy and Birth was created btw myself midwife & writer and cartoonist @lillyw89 to cover all aspects of pregnancy and birth, with sections covering health inequality for Black, Brown and other minoritised communities, the history of midwifery and obstetrics, mental health in the perinatal period and the politics of infant feeding. Far from shying away from these wider topics the graphic form makes medical, psychosocial and political aspects of childbirth and healthcare accessible and easier to engage with.
