Greatest Great Lakes tour was a success. Thank you to everyone who played stayed and helped put these shows on! Come see @light__beams at vs @songbyrddc tomorrow night!

If you watch any video of Light Beams, you’ll understand. They’re fun. They’ll make you shake your ass. You’ll be drumming on something. They’re also rad folks, and I’ll take any chance to hang with Sam (who we just saw with Sensor Ghost), Arthur (who we’ll see again next weekend with Bed Maker), and now also Fiona, Leah, and Justin.
While we went for Light Beams, Mourning [A] BLKstar alone would have been worth the price of admission. This was yet another show where the band I didn’t know (but had heard about in this case) really impressed me. Shows with a variety of styles are fantastic for exposure to new music. Here, the soulful, but electronic/hiphop infused sounds of MBS turned out to be an excellent pairing with Light Beams. More clapping. More Drumming. More dancing.
This was another great show.

Light Beams on Saturday night at Rhizome, performing that one song that I once helped out with by holding up a whiteboard cue card at an outdoor show. I don't know the title of the song but inside my brain I've been thinking of it as "Pisces Thing". Perhaps that's the actual title! Wouldn't *that* be a Capricorn thing!
As everyone knows, we are playing SATURDAY MARCH 28 at @rhizome_dc w @club_u.s.a and @gladystheband . As few know, this is a ZINE RELEASE show where you can get your copy of “Everything We Do Is For You: A Guide to Light Beams in Live Performance!” Which explains our band using words! Just $1.
See you there!

Secret Planet presents the unique and exquisite neo-zombie-folk group from Estonia, Puuluup! With very special guest Light Beams at Songbyrd Music House on Tuesday May 12!!
Puuluup was formed in 2014 by two talharpa enthusiasts Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson. Ramo Teder is a multi-instrumentalist and has been known for his long solo project Pastacas. He is also a looping pioneer in Estonia and has mastered these skills for twenty years already. Marko Veisson has a background in anthropology and his fieldwork in Northern Ghana as well as his love for West-African music have definitely influenced Puuluup’s style.
They play their own compositions on Talharpas – a traditional bowed lyre, popular in Northern Europe since the early Middle Ages and played on Western Estonian islands until the beginning of 20th century. Puuluup directs the vibrations of Talharpa’s horsehair strings through effect blocks and looper, uses alternative bowing and drumming techniques and sounds. The mellow sighs of talharpa are paired with electronically amplified echoes, knocks, creaks and crackles, while still maintaining the instrument’s natural sound.
They play with music as they play with words, sometimes creating their own language. As the band states: “We draw inspiration from Vormsi nights, trams in November, junkies in love, criminals from Odessa and Antonio Vivaldi”. As a side dish, when giving live concerts they also offer choreographic flittering which emerged on its own during the numerous days these two man spent in the rehearsal rooms. Their humor and warm charisma flows generously from the stage, drawing the audience in.
Light Beams is a dance-punk quintet from the District of Columbia. Their latest single “Step Back” — their first on Peterwalkee following a split release with Dischord earlier this year — continues their exploration of music created solely with percussion, samples, and vocals (and, okay, some bass guitar). Featuring members of D.C. stalwarts BRNDA, Sensor Ghost, Bed Maker, Dim Wizard, and Antelope.
