Superfine: Tailoring Black Style
In anticipation of the 2025 Met Gala, I studied Monica L. Millers/ Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the text that inspires this years theme, Initially I sought understand the history behind Black Dandyism as an era of fashion and styling âtailored suits, flamboyant elegance, but it turned out to be something more. A Movement. Rooted in the preservation of black culture even within the dehumanizing conditions of slavery, from which Black people expressed joy and built community. The twelve characteristics of dandy style Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism, are more than aesthetics. They are values. They are survival. They are power.
Tailored for You: the dress code for the Met Red Carpet is an ode to menswear reimagined through a the eyes of a dandy. I drew inspiration from works like Ike Udeâs Satorial Arnachy and Yinka Shonibareâs How Does a Girl Like You Get to Be a Girl Like You? focusing on the use of prints as well as structure and form, while taking notes from dandy style while being both archival and avant-garde.
Sitting with this theme and its history better shape my approach towards art and fashion as a tool of rebellion and for preservation of culture. Black dandyism isnât just about fashionâitâs about using fashion as a tool to reclaim space, craft identity, and challenge the narratives imposed on Black bodies.
âTo be a black dandy is to refuse invisibility and demand aesthetic and cultural presence.â - Monica L. Miller
