The concept made sense at the time, and feels even more fitting now. Washington led his morale-shaken troops through a time when the very idea of America was in jeopardy, and his resolve helped shift our nation’s fate. Colbert, in his own way, has led a cultural resistance of his own. Through a global pandemic, political chaos, disinformation —not to mention the unraveling of our democracy — his intelligence, humor, and thoughtfulness have anchored millions of us.
He was immediately keen to be photographed by Annie, but didn’t say yes to this concept right away. His longtime key advisor, @carriebyalick set up a call, and I had to make the case to him directly. Once it was clear that his team—his actual crew—would be in the boat with him, he was all in. That says a lot about who he is.

Today would have been Ronan Thompson’s 19th birthday 💜
Ronan died just days before his 4th birthday, but the impact of his life continues to ripple outward in extraordinary ways. Through his mother @mamamaya and her writing on the Rockstar Ronan blog ✍🏻 so raw, honest, loving, and devastating — millions of people were changed. Some went into medicine. Some became more compassionate parents, friends, nurses, strangers. Some simply chose to move through the world with more tenderness and humanity because of him. And through Ronan’s story, millions also became more aware of the realities of childhood cancer, and the urgent need for better treatments, research, and support for families living through it. Maya’s writing about grief also helped people better understand loss, and how deeply love endures alongside it.
And through Taylor Swift’s song “Ronan” and her support of programs like the Nurse Navigator Fund at @childrenshospitalofpa — his name continues to bring comfort, awareness, and help to families facing the unimaginable. The @ronanfoundation continues that work, pushing for better treatments and more research for children with cancer.
Because of Ronan, this world is kinder, more compassionate, and more awake to the realities of childhood cancer. That is an extraordinary legacy for such a little boy.
But still…he should be here… Nineteen years old today💜
Wishing a peaceful Mother’s Day to all the moms, aunties, sisters, friends, dads who do double duty, and those who nurture and support in ways great and small ❤️
I think of my beautiful mum, Ann, every day 🕊️
I especially miss our calls — it was always so fun and interesting to talk with her. She was incredibly well-informed and well-spoken…a true masterclass in conversation…and we could talk for hours.
Toward the end of her life, she volunteered with Hospice of the Valley in Arizona, putting her early nursing background back into action, caring for people with memory loss with compassion and grace.
I still want to call her every day, but now I talk to her in nature instead — when I see a cardinal, when my lilacs bloom, or when I watch the sun break over the ocean horizon, I’m pretty sure she’s part of all that now 🌞

Kate and I go way back to the peak late-aughts Vanity Fair Hollywood portfolio shoots (epic, obviously 📸) she was a brand new fashion assistant then — incredibly hardworking and always a ray of sunshine, even while schlepping dozens of wardrobe trunks across the country. Now she’s an author and a painter of VERY covetable watercolors 🎨 Yes, I want them ALL, please! 🫶🏼

Having worked on the shoot with @annieleibovitz & team, this issue is def one to keep ❤️
Glad I did — it was flying off the shelves, with a window entirely devoted to the cover 🙌🏼
