Getting this year’s round of spotlights started with someone very special: our fabulous Chorus Director, Maestro John Keene✨ ( @keenejohn )
He is originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania!
His first experience with San Francisco Opera was back in 1996 when he was a faculty member of the Merola Program—he conducted the Western Opera Theater tour’s production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia later that year! (One of the pictures above is from his time back then)
He began as Chorus Director in January 2022—his first show as Chorus Director was our production of Don Giovanni during the summer of that same year!
His favorite color is blue—especially a deep Maxfield Parrish shade!
While he finds it hard to select a favorite score as he falls in love with every project he tackles, a score that holds a special place in his heart and is his most significant career favorite is Der Ring des Nibelungen because it is a challenging and all-encompassing project that is unforgettable on so many levels!
His favorite Hayes Valley eateries are Hayes Street Grill and A Mano!
The scores he’s looking forward to performing most this year are Kaija Saariaho’s “Innocence” (which opened this past weekend to rave reviews—get your tickets now!) and Tristan und Isolde coming this Fall!
We are so grateful for Maestro who works tirelessly to guide us through every score the opera house throws at us—he is the balm that keeps us together and allows us to shine on the War Memorial stage every time and we are SO happy he is here!
Stay tuned for more spotlights, chorus info, shenanigans and more!✨
