🌟 PSSA Member Profile: Kate Langrish-Smith 🧨 We are delighted to present the work of new PSSA Member Kate Langrish-Smith, whose practice explores the language of form, materiality and movement through ceramics, assemblage and performances to camera. Her practice is sculptural and material lead using clay and other transformative and plastic materials to draw connections between bodily gesture, balance, and the physical and visual memories held by matter. She creates evocative clusters of objects that engage with embodiment, surreality, and composition - an approach that reconfigures and highlights everyday materials and forms, inviting viewers to consider the narrative and origins behind familiar objects echoed in novel forms. Her practice is represented in international museum collections including the Yingge Ceramics Museum (Taiwan), Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art (South Korea), and nationally at Sheffield Museums Trust (UK). She is a member of PSSA and the Royal Society of Sculptors. 🚦Kate is one of the Shortlisted artists for the @london_sculpture_prize and her work will be on show at Gunnersbury Park Museum from 25th November 2025. Currently on display as part of The Naughton Galleries sixth annual sports exhibition, ‘DRIBBLE’ Self-portrait with Club after Giacometti and Man Ray (2021) and Spiked Club (2021) are part of a series of forms and ongoing research, in making, sculpting, using and documenting objects associated with physical culture. Previously popular physical culture objects, the solid wooden lathed fitness pins or ‘Indian Swinging Clubs’ inspired the ceramic form. The objects became fashionable in 19th century Britain, after colonists noted their use in Indian physical culture practices. They were adopted and re-interpreted in accordance with Victorian physical culture fashions and used to develop both military and civilian fitness. The image ‘Self-portrait with club after Giacometti and Man Ray’ was developed as a way of contextualising the scale of the form. It references a photograph taken in 1931 by Man Ray titled ‘Woman holding the disagreeable objet’ ‐ the ‘disagreeable object’ was made by Alberto Giacometti. DRIBBLE is open daily, 11am-4pm, until 25 September 2024 Images from Naughton Gallery @naughton_gallery by Simon Mills @photosbysi Daniel Batista Celia Croft HuskMitNavn Jules Magistry MAKIHIROCHI Sean O’Connor John Rainey Didi Rojas Casey Steffens Alex Synge Nathan Walker Justin Yoon

Currently on display as part of The Naughton Galleries sixth annual sports exhibition, ‘DRIBBLE’ Body in Landscape Postures I, II, III with Ceramic Haltere (2022) explores objects associated with the origins of sport and physical culture. The ceramic object based on the Ancient Greek Haltere, is thought have preceded the modern-day dumbbell, and would have been carved out of stone. In the images that accompany the object I explore the relationship of the body to both the landscape and the ceramic haltere in a performance to camera (📷 @florencemaisie ) playing with surreality, assumed functionality and purpose. DRIBBLE is open daily, 11am-4pm, until 25 September 2024 Images from Naughton Gallery Belfast @naughton_gallery by Simon Mills @photosbysi Including work by: Daniel Batista Celia Croft HuskMitNavn Jules Magistry MAKIHIROCHI Sean O’Connor John Rainey Didi Rojas Casey Stefans Alex Synge Nathan Walker Justin Yoon

Exhibition opening today in sunny Scarborough @oldparcelsofficeartspace @royal_sculptors MATERIAL TRUTHS – Exploring the Substance of Sculpture The materiality of a sculpture affects and impacts on the viewer’s experience and engagement with its presence. The artist’s ideas, purpose, contextual backstory and expression is held in its form, its matter and the space it occupies. Materials and their different qualities will often determine the form and narrative of a work. “Truth to Materials” was of fundamental importance to Henry Moore who stated “Every material has its own individual qualities. It is only when the sculptor works direct, when there is an active relationship with his material, that the material can take its part in the shaping of an idea”. This is exhibition by Northern and Scottish members of The Royal Society of Sculptors seeks to freely explore individual members’ material truths. Gallery: The Old Parcels Office Art Space Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1TU Exhibition Dates: 23rd March to 21st April. The curators are Paul Bonomini, Sally Gorham, and Rob Moore.
