Artcore team travelled to Osnabrück to celebrate Derby Day alongside the artists of the Building Bridges Residency 2026. At the Sculpture Gallery, artists from Derby and Osnabrück came together for an inspiring evening of conversations, exchanges, and new connections. The four Derby-based residency artists Clare Francis-Slater, Claudia Sweet, Elis Prostotak, and Ray Gumbley met the wider Osnabrück artist community, while also connecting with the four Osnabrück artists who will soon travel to Derby for the second edition of Building Bridges at Artcore. The celebrations spilled into Derby Square, where all eight artists collaboratively created a large chalk mural for Derby Day, filling the square with colour, energy, excitement, and a shared spirit of creativity and cultural exchange. #BuildingBridges #Artcore #DerbyDay #Osnabrück #ArtistResidency CulturalExchange ContemporaryArt PublicArt

The four Building Bridges artists from Derby Clare Francis-Slater, Claudia Sweet, Elis Prostotak, and Ray Gumbley are now in Osnabrück, beginning a period of exchange, exploration, and dialogue with Emily Witte, Jasper Tiemeyer, Karl Fröhlich and Melanie Harder, four artists from Osnabrück, who will soon visit Derby as part of the continuing residency programme. Over the past few days, our artists have been exploring museums, walking through the city and the surrounding landscapes, and sharing meals, conversations, and encounters that will shape the projects developed during the residency. Organised by Artcore Derby (GB), Hase29, and Skulptur-Galerie, Building Bridges 2026 forms part of a year-long series of cultural celebrations (2026–2027) marking both the golden jubilee of the Derby–Osnabrück twinning and Derby’s city status, bringing together artists, communities, and institutions across borders.

We are thrilled to share the successful opening of Connecting Solidarities at Artcore this Saturday. Developed with the Derby Bosnia Herzegovina Community Association and the University of Derby, the exhibition marks 30 years of solidarity, resilience, and community-building by the Bosnian community in Derby and Derbyshire. Thank you to everyone who joined us and engaged so deeply with the stories held within the space. Special acknowledgement to Deputy Mayor of Derby City: Councillor Philip Ingall, Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill CBE, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, Professor Keith McLay, Associate Professor, Dr Larissa Allwork, Project Lead for AHRC Connecting Solidarities, Ferid Kevric - Founder and manager of the DBHCA until 2022, and Ruchita Sheikh (Artcore CEO) for attending the show. Weaving together historical roots and geographical routes, the exhibition traces the journey of the Bosnian community in Derby, from the refugee programmes of the 1990s to the formation of enduring networks of care and support across Derbyshire. The exhibition is on view at Artcore till 22 May.

Artist Announcement | Building Bridges 2026 We’re excited to introduce Claudia Sweet, one of four artists in Building Bridges - Artcore’s annual exchange residency programme with Osnabrück. Working across drawing, painting, and moving image, Claudia explores how personal reflection intersects with collective histories, particularly in sites shaped by conflict and resolution, such as those connected to the Peace of Westphalia. Her work navigates what is remembered, distorted, or unresolved. She is also part of Artcore Studios. In the coming days, you will hear about exciting projects by the artists during their Building Bridges residency in Osnabrück from 8–22 May. This year marks the 50 years of twinning between Derby and Osnabrück. #ArtCore #BuildingBridges #derby #gallery
