🗨️ As a contemporary artist, I am not interested in pastiche or sentiment but am interested in exploring how the medieval period has shaped our own and making reference to our shared life experiences despite the centuries between us. 🗨️ Bound in rich shades of blue, red and gold, ‘Measuring the Heavens’ (2020) is a work by book artist and printmaker Kate Bernstein. It comprises four parts; a box, a folio (hinged cover), an inner book with a concertina of paper that stretches to over a metre, and a folded paper citing the projects’ sources. But the beauty of this piece is not just in its construction. Borrowing imagery, data and centuries of knowledge from the Royal Astronomical Society’s library and archives, every carefully crafted component of ‘Measuring the Heavens’ tells us a story about those who chose to document the cosmos. 🔭 Inspired by Kate’s work? Looking forward to teaching with bookbinder Rachel James @rwabristol in their drawing school. Inspired by Measuring the Heavens, my artists book, currently on exhibition in Cosmos:the Art of Observing Space @rwabristol my part of the course will be to show students how to create their own folio and linked page book. Great opening @rwabristol last night for Cosmos: the art of observing Space. Delighted that my artists book Measuring the Heavens, which I created in collaboration with Sian Prosser @astro_librarian , was one of the items on loan from the @royalastrosoc . Brilliantly curated by @ioneparkin the exhibition is an extraordinary blend of historic artefacts and contemporary artworks which includes work by Yinka Shonibare, Cornelia Parker, @ianchamberlainartist , space books by @ottographic and many others. A multi-layered show which reflects humanity’s enduring fascination with the cosmos through a huge variety of artistic exploration.

Print and Bind is back to start your year off with some playful and experimental work! Alongside the excellent @angelalaiyenprintmaker , I will be teaching this very fluid book form - Mountains and Valleys . A full Saturday of printing, February 14th, followed by the evening of finishing and binding on February Tuesday 24th in Larkhall @bathartistprintmakers lovely studio. You will leave with a unique book of your own prints, which moves and displays in a variety of ways, bound into a cover with an inset panel which you can fill with a label, a print or anything you fancy! Long time coming... I am sorry real life has been a tad busy and I got sidetracked with a Pop Up Shop and an Winter Open Studio! Here we are though...the results of Print & Bind a collaborative class by Kate Bernstein @k.bernstein2 and myself - students' linocut handmade concertina books. A design concept from the off. Focused carving. Guidance with printing using the Berwick & Wilson. Pause for drying. Students personalised their pages or not. Folding down pages. Niffy tips for handling paper. Glue. Making bookends and attaching pages. Breathe. What a perfect way to present a small collection of prints to make them all that more precious. The first class and it was a blast! Saturday is nearly here and the first part of the Print and Bind workshop @bathartistprintmakers with myself and @angelalaiyenprintmaker helping our students print and bind concertina books. The apparent simplicity of the concertina disguises its mighty role in, amongst other things, presenting narratives and grouping individual images. The unfolding of them in the hand is very satisfying. Some of mine on the final images. There is currently a metre high concertina in my studio … coming soon. New class to share- @angelalaiyenprintmaker and I have put together a Print & Bind class. Spend a Saturday @bathartistprintmakers creating Lino prints with @angelalaiyenprintmaker and choosing your book coverings and binding details with me and then a Wednesday evening binding your book. Time in between to finish your prints or add to them. You’ll leave with your own printed and bound artists book. There are a couple of places left so please DM me or @angelalaiyenprintmaker for info. Dates: Saturday 4th October 10.30-3.30, Wednesday 22nd October 6-9pm at Bath Artist Printmakers in Larkhall, Bath.

I really enjoyed giving a workshop this weekend with lovely participants @ushapearceart @rachelwilcoxartistprintmaker and Sue. The rain came down and we tucked ourselves into the friendly studio @bathartistprintmakers and made pamphlet sewn hard back notebooks, 8 page folded books and flag books. Everyone made flag books with their own materials and I really enjoyed seeing the books emerge! Great and very individual results.
