Join me on Monday evening, 27th April at 6.30pm, when I have the privilege of talking with @susanyork.studio about our practices, shared influences and parallels between material and conceptual approaches to making art. This is part of an @royal_sculptors ongoing zoom encounters between fellow members, but free and open to all. Facilitated by the ever capable @isabel_de_vasconcellos I’m looking forward to expanding my unstanding and perhaps vision of what it is to be an artist - do join us. Link in bio above. * Please note - conversation is Monday 27th - not Wednesday 29th as in image* #publictalk #arttalk #artconversation #connection

Shadow stones from a current drawing project - duplicated into wax ready to casting into bronze and then aging. Loving the repetition of form which draws my attention to the hugh variation in surface detail and presence. I normally stay away from bronze as a medium to make sculpture, but here it is the perfect medium for the stones were found on Bronze Age hill forts, which has relevance for the project. More to come… #stones #copies #duplicate #facsimile #wax #sculpture

Good to see my model for the Elizabeth Landmark installed at Womble Bond Dickinson offices in Newcastle - thank you WBD. Work continues to raise funds for its construction in rural Northumberland: a landmark sculpture celebrating the reign of Britain’s longest reigning monarch and her life long dedication to the commonwealth. Standing 55m tall, this site specific sculpture’s design references QEII, the Commonwealth and many local social, historic and geographic influences. Tying in with my studio practice it also engages with the celestial, pointing to the sun at its zenith on midsummer’s day. Interesting process yesterday, scanning my sculpture Passage, currently in the exhibition #cosmos @rwa Bristol until 19 April. Another reversal of form and medium: the original boulder became a negative mould, then a second positive mould in order to sledge a solid concrete form of an ethereal phenomenon, the shadow and the 4th dimension. Now it becomes millions of tiny points in a space cloud which again describe 3d form but on a 2d surface, transportable through space via the internet, perhaps to become another 3d form in the future. Sculpture, the exploration of time and space - the phenomenological to analogue reality to digital perception. #sculpture #3dscanning #tech #analogue #digital

Yorkshire, the home of sculpture? Certainly enjoyed the William Kentridge playful 2d/3d sculptures and @nicolaturner.art unnerving installation @yspsculpture . But my greatest pleasure was spending time in my favourite room in the country - the sculpture library @henrymooreinstitute #leeds #research #sculpture

The rising and setting sun as it throws its light upon tiny stones found on location at seven given sites over a week long drawing odyssey. A quest to mark, explore and seek to further understand time as it travels westward from London to the Quantocks in Somerset, starting on the Vernal Equinox. Each day the sun rose at 06.07, yet set progressively later: 18.10 in London and 18.33 in Somerset, such is the curvature of the Earth. In pairs: • Prime Meridian, Blackheath • Holmbury Hill, Surrey • Old Winchester Hill, Hampshire • Figsbury Ring, Wiltshire • Bratton Camp, Wiltshire • Glastonbury Tor, Somerset • Cothelstone Hill, Somerset A collaborative work in progress with @jemsoutham #sunrise #sunset #chasingtime

High noon, high on the Quantocks - Cothelstone Hill. This, the final day of my seven day drawing odyssey In Pursuit of Time, and the sun has yet to appear. Low clouds this morning, lifting slightly with a strengthening wind to reveal far away patches of enigmatic sunlight falling on Bridgewater Bay and the Vale of Taunton. I do indeed frequently ask myself ‘How did I get here?’, tired and barely warm enough, but that’s the very answer, to be Here. To witness the passing of a day and the passing of time. To immerse myself in landscapes, external and internal. To journey with purpose yet be accepting of unexpected outcomes. To observe, to make, to be. Inspired by Edward Thomas’ book In Pursuit of Spring, I’ve followed his route westward from London (with a few small deviations such as starting on the Prime Meridian), starting each new day at the same time: 06.07, even though the days are getting longer. Each site has been a man-altered landscape, typically Neolithic hillforts and Bronze Age barrows, yet the geological objects I used to mark time are unaltered, pure and site specific. I think of the speed which the Earth is constantly rotating eastward beneath my feet, changing the stone’s shadows I’m hopelessly chasing. I think of the Earth’s ceaseless progress on its annular path in orbit around the sun and how that changes the top horizon of my drawings day to day. I’ve basked in the borrowed warmth of the sun when at its zenith, only to layer on my multitude coats as it dips over the western horizon. And I think of Edward Thomas who sat on this very spot in early spring of 1913 when at the culmination of his own personal journey. The one truth I do know is that in time, spring will arrive, and that the sun will again rise tomorrow. #drawing #landscape #pursuit #cothelstonehill #edwardthomas #time #patience #intention

Noon tide shadows. Details of today’s drawing on Bratton Camp, another man-altered landscape, in Wiltshire. Day five of seven on my odyssey with time, starting on the Vernal Equinox in London and heading west towards the Quantocks of Somerset. Following a route inspired by Edward Thomas’ book In Pursuit of Spring. On each new location the sun rises at 06.07, even though the days are getting longer - heading west, away from the rising sun, to draw, to seek. #immersion #shadows #parallel #lines #drawing #landscape
