This week, my #WomanCrushWednesday is Audrey Nichols, a @StudentsDemand volunteer and rising senior at the University of Connecticut.
Born and raised in Newtown, Connecticut, Audrey survived the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in second grade. Since then, she’s advocated for gun violence prevention in Connecticut and across the country. This past year, she founded UConn’s Students Demand Action chapter and has been a constant presence at the Connecticut State Capitol throughout the legislative session. She testified in support of a bill that would ban the sale of DIY machine guns, which are dangerous weapons created by converting pistols into fully automatic firearms with a tiny, Lego-sized device known as a “switch.”
Last week, thanks to Audrey and the advocacy of @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers and survivors, lawmakers passed this lifesaving legislation. This marks a critical step toward keeping these weapons out of our communities, and it now heads to the governor’s desk for signature.
Thank you, @audrey.lnichols . #WCW

My #WomanCrushWednesday this week is Hanna LoPatin, the @MomsDemand volunteer leader of the Michigan chapter.
Hanna got involved in the gun violence prevention movement for the same reason so many of us do: because our kids deserve to grow up safe, and our leaders aren’t doing enough to make that a reality. Now, as a volunteer leader and graduate of Everytown’s Demand A Seat program, Hanna is helping lead the charge for stronger state gun safety laws.
Last week, Hanna joined fellow volunteers and survivors, alongside Governor Gretchen Whitmer, at the Michigan Capitol to call on lawmakers to strengthen oversight of gun dealers and stop illegal gun trafficking. Federal rollbacks will put our communities at risk, and states like Michigan are stepping up to stop illegal weapons from ending up on our streets, and in our parks and neighborhoods.
@hanna_lopatin , thank you for stepping up and pushing for change. #WCW

My #WomanCrushWednesday this week is Dr. Poornema Ramasamy, a physician and advocate in South Carolina.
Drawing on over 20 years of experience in hospital medicine, Poornema volunteers for @BeSMARTForKids to educate adults about the importance of secure gun storage in preventing gun death, injury, and trauma.
Poornema has spent years championing strong partnerships across South Carolina between law enforcement agencies, schools, and hospitals to promote Be SMART. A few weeks ago, she teamed up with longtime Be SMART partners Prisma Health and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to give away hundreds of gun boxes and locks to the local community during the Sheriff’s Foundation Annual Car and Truck Show through a grant from the CDC.
Guns left unlocked and easily accessible can put everyone at risk: there is nearly one gun stolen from a car every nine minutes in the US.
@poornemaramsamy , thank you for your commitment to public health, both in and out of the hospital. #WCW
