Bobst Library Pixel Veil received the Best of 20: Installation at the 2025 Interior Design Best of Year Awards -- a special honor recognizing the most impactful projects of the past 20 years.
Completed in 2012, the Pixel Veil is a security screen to prevent suicide attempts, saving lives while also preserving the architectural integrity of Philip Johnson’s iconic NYU atrium. Now more than a decade later, the project’s recognition affirms the importance of design approaches that engage safety, care, and preservation, and highlights how architecture can contribute meaningfully to addressing urgent social challenges.
Join us for the public opening of the Museum of Disability History Opens at the Viscardi Center on Tuesday, Feb 17th!
JSA/MIXdesign led the exhibition design for the Museum of Disability History at The Viscardi Center, working in close collaboration with curators Ignacio G. Galán and Jordan Whitewood-Neal and the graphic design studio MTWTF. The exhibition unfolds through fourteen thematic “portals,” framing disability history not as singular or chronological, but as a constellation of intersecting stories.
Featuring archival film, historic photographs, books, artwork, and personal effects, the museum documents the lived experiences and achievements of people with disabilities.

From 2020 to 2022, the Queens Museum worked closely with JSA/MIXdesign (@jsamixdesign ) and Queens Community House (@qchnyc ) on the design-research project "Queens Museum: Central Atrium for All". We are proud to share that the project report is now live and accessible on our website!
"Queens Museum: Central Atrium for All" is part of JSA/MIXdesign’s larger initiative MIXmuseum (founded in 2018), which works with institutional partners to create open-source recommendations and toolkits for museums to improve the public-facing areas of the visitor experience.
This report documents not only the end-product of this research, but also the story of implementing a participatory design process to generate design recommendations that can be adapted by a wide range of institutions to make their buildings more accessible and welcoming for diverse audiences.

#ThrowbackThursday Joel Sanders Architect’s 2017 West Village Duplex
The West Village is known for its historic redbrick and brownstone townhouses. However, at the riverfront is where industrial buildings resided. In the 1960s and ’70s, these industrial buildings were converted into makeshift lofts. One of those lofts caught the eye of a CEO who was looking for a new home—turning to Joel Sanders Architect (@joelsandersarchitect ) to update the loft from being dark and cramped into a spacious, light-filled dwelling. Sanders increased the ceiling height, updated the staircase, and utilized a palette that combines natural and ebonized white oak, complemented by mid-century and contemporary furniture by the likes of Norman Cherner and Rodolfo Dordoni.
