Over the years, the Sunset Park Puerto Rican Day Parade & Festival has become a beloved celebration within the vibrant, multi-cultural fabric of the Sunset Park neighborhood. Community members gather along the streets to experience the rhythmic energy and rich traditions of this family friendly event. The festivities culminate in the park, where the community comes together to participate in a bombazo that transforms the park atmosphere with traditional Caribbean beats and movement. Building off of last year’s installation Parada: La Fiesta No Termina Aquí, designed by Vanessa Gonzalez, we will activate the park again with a participatory design intervention that connects music, people, dance, and urban green spaces together.
We’ve been working ✍🏼👷♀️on a striking fabric canopy installation that will delineate a central gathering point in the park. Inspired by the flowing movements of bomba skirts and the undulating rhythms of the music, the canopy’s fluid form merges seamlessly into the landscape.
