Far fewer people have seen the living pottery traditions that still exist across compounds in cities like Kano and Ilorin. These pottery compounds are not just sites of craft, they are living systems of knowledge shaped by generations - an indentation in the earth, a bowl of water, a pot slowly emerging from clay. This is design intelligence practiced through the body. In the Dawakin Tofa and Dada compounds, much of the pottery economy is sustained by women working quietly within their own yards, their labour often unseen. Every kiln placement, drying shed, and clay storage area reflects generations of observing how materials behave, turning these compounds into archives of spatial knowledge. Read the full piece on via the link in bio! Clay Matriarchs and their Compund Logics was written by Sumayyah Sunmade Raji @maya_raji Video Credit: @maya_raji In the video, we watch Alhaja Railat Asaka in Ilorin work with the assured ease of a matriarch who owns both her craft and its telling.

“Doing it wrong is better than doing nothing at all.” Every prototype, misstep, and iteration pushes the future of sustainable making forward. Our newest story is now live! @c.q.studio explores how pigment from textile wastewater can be transformed into fungi-based bio-sequins, replacing harmful plastics while creating regenerative materials. Discover the full conversation with Cassie Quinn on our site. We’re talking everything from waste, regeneration, and giving designers the grace to fail. 🔗 Link in bio #SustainableFashion #Biomaterials #CircularDesign #InnovationInTextiles #CQStudio #RoundaboutCommunity

Over three days last week in October, _Heritage in Motion_ brought together artists, makers, and design enthusiasts to explore how African craft continues to shape the future of design. Presented as part of Forum Création Africa (FCA) 2025, the exhibition created space for conversation around heritage, innovation, and sustainability, reinstating that tradition is not something frozen in time, but a living practice that continues to evolve. We were honoured to welcome over 500+ visitors, including press, cultural representatives, and the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside the teams from across France. Each interaction reminded us of the growing global interest in African creativity and collaboration. A huge thank you to our collaborators who were instrumental in bringing this to life @johannabramblecreations @lisafolawiyo @nya_lagos @c.q.studio @mekekadesigns #SussFabrics and to our partners, *MansA (Maison des Mondes Africains), Ambassade de France au Nigeria, Add.Apt, Growink*, and *Iwalewa Books* at 16/16. and to everyone who helped make this possible. @maisonmondesafricains @franceinnigeria @iwalewabooks @16by16 @add_apt @growink_ Heritage in Motion was developed and curated by Roundabout.

Heritage in Motion begins today! Through the revival of inherited techniques and skills, we reveals how the past breathes quietly within the present, sustaining creativity, identity, and belonging. Rooted in local traditions yet inherently pan-African in spirit, the exhibition celebrates collaboration, material integrity, and the enduring beauty of the handmade. A living dialogue between past and future, heritage and imagination. We are so proud to have these distinguished collaborators : @johannabramblecreations @lisafolawiyo @nya_lagos @c.q.studio @mekekadesigns #SussFabrics Thank you for sharing your exceptional work with us. Get down to check out our new collaboration as part of @thesustainableangle edit at Urban Harvest at @shoreditchworkslondon as part of @l_d_f_official London to Lagos: CQ Studio x Roundabout collaboration brings together CQ Studio with celebrated Nigerian designers Lisa Folawiyo and Nya. Together, we are reimagining the future of fashion through two one-of-a-kind dresses: modern silhouettes that marry heritage beading with innovative, sustainable materials. Beading is an ancient craft deeply rooted in African design, and remains a foundation for future-making. Here, it is redefined through the use of local textiles, deadstock fabrics, and bio sequins that dissolve back into the earth, offering a sustainable alternative to plastic. The result is not only a fusion of heritage and innovation, but also a vision of what responsible design can look like. The project was conceptualised by ROUNDABOUT. ROUNDABOUT nurtures dialogue, tools, and networks that are rooted in sustainable principles across Africa. A special thanks to @yasminrjh and @thesustainableangle for inviting us to showcase this collaboration! @joinroundabout @nya_lagos @lisafolawiyo_studio

Last week’s roundtable with @consciousfashion revealed something truly inspiring. It challenged us to rethink the essence of design — is it merely about creating something new, or is it about crafting meaningful solutions? In the world of sustainable fashion, purposeful design is essential, and it inevitably comes with constraints. Overcoming obstacles, whether financial, material sourcing, or production errors, leads to solution-driven design, where innovation itself becomes a new form of creativity. Let’s hear from our speakers — Oroma @oromatherapy , Mira @miramusank , and Tina @kkerele on how true innovation often arises when we lean into what feels like a boundary. Swipe through to listen to their stories ✨

🌍 Last Thursday was Earth Overshoot Day — the date that we’ve used up the ecological resources our planet can regenerate this year. In the fashion x sustainability space, we’re already familiar with limits, physical and financial, intentionally chosen and unavoidable. From limited funding and materials to finite capacity and time, these constraints often form the way we work in this space. ✨ In the roundtable co-hosted by the CFC Membership and @joinroundabout last Thursday, we discussed how these limitations can actually be a spark for innovation in conscious fashion. Swipe through for takeaways from @oromatherapy of @thisisusng , Tina Akerele of @kkerele , and @miramusank of @rethinktherunway ’s experiences and insights during this roundtable. ⤵️ Have limits inspired creativity within your own career or business?

As we wrapped up the workshop with the final brand @thisisusng we were excited to see their team exploring and experimenting with zero waste design with not just with new patterns, but with solutions we hadn’t even imagined at the start. One standout idea came from in-house designer Charles, using the small area of “negative” space (ie waste) next to the hip curve of a skirt to create delicate frayed details. A subtle but powerful shift that perfectly captured the spirit of zero waste thinking. Designing with constraint didn’t limit creativity, it sparked it. This was a clear reminder that when we design with purpose, innovation naturally follows. #MakingZeroWaste #ZeroWaste #PatternCutting #Lagos #ThisisUs 📸 : @brody_carmichael

On Thursday, @ywande__ joined our Zero Waste Workshop, exploring the power of critical thinking around waste and engaging in a thoughtful dialogue on how smart design decisions at the very start can lead to meaningful impact. Through hands-on paper play, the team experimented with layout and form, unlocking new ways to design with intention. By simply rethinking pattern placement, they were able to reduce fabric use by over a yard on a classic shirt design. Proof that small mindset shifts can lead to big change. Sustainable design isn’t about compromise, it’s about creativity and responsibility. We’re proud to have @ywande__ on this journey with us. #MakingZeroWaste is sponsored by @lagosxparis and @af.lagos 📸 : @brody_carmichael
