Join us May 29 and May 30 for our annual Mount Vernon Symposium! This year's symposium, titled Becoming American, focuses on what defined truly American style and tastes in the formative first century of the United States, and how the process of creating a new nation also informed and inspired a new material world.
We have a wonderful lineup of speakers, including Jay Robert Stiefel, Lauren B. Hewes, and John Stuart Gordon. In-person and virtual tickets are available now via the link in our bio or at /plan-your-visit/calendar/events/becoming-american-2026-mount-vernon-symposium#main-content.

Learning about the death of Thomas Gentille (1936-2026) makes for a gloomy day. He was precise, elegant, and thoughtful as an artist and jeweler. Sometimes called a minimalist, his works were deceptively complex, both in their construction and meaning. He was more of a sensualist, in love with materials and what he could coax them to do. He hated dating his works and would hate that we’ve now added a date to his life—he wanted art to transcend time
