A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for yesterday’s @thedcpg Potters Open Day 2026 — an unmissable day of contemporary ceramics at the Guild, filled with live demonstrations, expert insight, and the chance to experience and collect exceptional work. We were proud to welcome an outstanding line-up of makers: John Higgins, Toni de Jesus, and Paul Young — each sharing a unique perspective on process, material, and practice. Together, they offered a rich and engaging look into contemporary ceramics, tracing the journey from inspiration to realisation. From John Higgins’ reflections on nature, place, and people, to Toni de Jesus’ bold and expressive sculptural forms, and Paul Young’s fresh reinterpretation of historic ceramic traditions, the day celebrated the diversity and depth of making today. Thank you again to our incredible makers and to everyone who came along to be part of such a special day — we loved sharing it with you! ❤️

@johnceramics ’ new body of work, The Masters of War, was created during the Calitzdorp residency. The series took shape in a moment of quiet interrupted by the news of unfolding international conflict - images of towns, homes and families destroyed. That contrast, between violence elsewhere and the stillness of one’s own home, became the starting point for this work. John describes the pieces as an attempt to give form to frustration and the difficulty of comprehending such suffering. The title is drawn from Bob Dylan’s 1963 song, and each work in the series has a title from its first verse. Swipe to hear John reflect on this body of work, currently on view as part of The Cutting Edge at Art Soko.

Moments from our time at Kraaldoring residency - a special feature of The Cutting Edge. From 4–19 November, @clementinaceramics_studio and I @albi.bailey hosted @johnceramics and @hess8227 at our restored farmhouse near Calitzdorp. The days moved between studio work, shared meals and long conversations, with the Swartberg foothills setting the pace. New pieces took shape during those two weeks - works that now form part of the exhibition and carry something of the place, the process and the exchange that happened there. These residency works sit alongside the broader exhibition, offering a glimpse into making as it happens: quietly, collaboratively and rooted in connection. To view these residency pieces visit us at Art Soko Gallery. Monday to Friday, 10:00 – 16:30
