An Anselm Kiefer made itself in front of me early this morning. Scenes like this turn up regularly in my writing. Old bones sweep to and fro, like the pulse of the earth, billions of years old. Sometimes these bones sing. On the land around the house bleached white bones lie in state
Just one week left to see The Cutting Edge at Art Soko Gallery.
Featuring works by @hess8227 , @johnceramics , @hongenius , @henniemeyerceramics , @clementinaceramics_studio , and @margarete_woermann_ceramics , the exhibition brings together artists whose approaches to clay and fibre embrace experimentation, texture and form.
If you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, now’s the time - The Cutting Edge is on show until 30 January 2026.
Find us at 501 Tollgate Industrial Centre, 12 Ravenscraig Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town.
Open Monday to Friday, 10:00 - 16:30.
It is simply stunning that Professor Gayatri Chakravorti is the recipient of the Holberg Prize this year, and in the wake of Professor Griselda Pollock receiving it so recently. I kinda worship at the alter of both women. They are intellectual giants. We need heed these women especially urgently in this abject age.
Moments from our time at Kraaldoring residency - a special feature of The Cutting Edge.
From 4–19 November, @clementinaceramics_studio and I @albi.bailey hosted @johnceramics and @hess8227 at our restored farmhouse near Calitzdorp. The days moved between studio work, shared meals and long conversations, with the Swartberg foothills setting the pace.
New pieces took shape during those two weeks - works that now form part of the exhibition and carry something of the place, the process and the exchange that happened there.
These residency works sit alongside the broader exhibition, offering a glimpse into making as it happens: quietly, collaboratively and rooted in connection.
To view these residency pieces visit us at Art Soko Gallery. Monday to Friday, 10:00 – 16:30
@hess8227 ’s Fearflowers series unfolds at the fragile threshold between allure and unease. In works such as Tjienkerientjee and Chinkerinchee, Andre Hess transforms the Cape bulb Ornithogalum thyrsoides - pristine in beauty yet quietly toxic - into a psychological terrain.
These pieces hold their tension at the edge between seduction and warning, where tenderness trembles on the brink of danger.
Visit Art Soko to experience Andre’s Fearflowers in The Cutting Edge exhibition.

It always gives one a warm feeling seeing one’s own work in a museum. These pieces span many years of making. They are in the Clay Museum near Cape Town in South Africa.
For those who don’t know, I am also a maker of art. This exhibition contains work I made while on a residency at Kraaldoring in the Groenvallei near Calitzdorp, South Africa. I wanted to use as few means as possible, eschewing anything too technical. The results were interesting.
