🔊 What if we could connect to artworks through sound? 👂
This week we were joined by @thegaragenorwich Youth Board, who explored artworks in our Living Area and Sculpture Park, such as Julian Stair’s Monumental Jar VIII, through different resonances.
Our associate sound and 4D artist Johann Don-Daniel (@johanndondaniel ) tells us all about this experiment, which brought our objects to life in unconventional ways.

Amazing to develop a project with the learning and archival teams @sainsburycentre and Garage Youth. This is a mini clip of some of the investigations/interventions into sound narratives and resonance with @lynnchadwickarchives Beasts. 🙏 🙏 🔊 🔊 #Soundart #sainsburycentre #resonance #artsculpture #sculptingsound #interaction #sculpturepark #uea #community
Ok Hām (Home, House, Village) is open now! I am cold and a little bit hungry and the sound of cooking (via his mechanic fathers car radio) & smells of Sri Lankan curry are emanating from this brilliant @johanndondaniel piece in the kitchen at 635 London Rd, South. What a tease! Eat before you come to visit!
Hām (Home. House. Village.) Open now in Pakefield, PV tomorrow evening. A lot to digest, hidden treasures. See what you can find.
The first iteration of my work ‘Rice and Curry’, is in there somewhere. Follow your nose.

Vessels: intertea modulation adhere (work in progress)
Interactive work, activated through touch. First trial at the @norwichsciencefestival in the Snug. Modulation, sensitivity, liquid, play. Was a pleasure to bring some work there, big thanks to everyone involved.

CREATIVE SCHOOLS | Spaces and Places
As part of his Spaces and Places Residency, Johann Johann Don-Daniel worked with pupils from Year 4 at Sheringham Community Primary School. Using mammoth skeleton remains which were discovered on a nearby beach as inspiration, participants built a large mammoth head, devised and recorded soundscapes using both acoustic and electronic sound, designed sound machines, and learnt how to play the recordings through their artwork using conductive materials.
Spaces and Places is a three-year programme of artist-in-school residencies that form a core element of our Creative Schools offer across East Anglia. The programme aims to celebrate place and identity and develop a sense of community pride and belonging.
Each year, four residencies are delivered in four schools or educational settings, with each residency delivered by a different artist. As with much of our work, activity is focused in areas of need and where there are typically low levels of cultural engagement and opportunity.
In a time where children and young people inhabit an increasingly ‘virtual’ world, participants are encouraged to investigate the ‘real’ built and natural environment in their part of the world, and to think about the communities to which these spaces, places, points of interest, etc. have meaning.
The focus of the residencies – e.g., a chosen space, place or site – are determined in collaboration with the artist, school staff and participants, and each concludes with a local community sharing.
As well as offering a unique artist-led experience for children and young people, Spaces and Places also supports the professional development of teaching staff through the artist collaboration process and a bespoke CPD session which is offered as part of the programme.
Each residency has its own identity and we aim to build, over the three years, a unique collection of East Anglian stories, spaces and places, chosen by and shared through the eyes of local children and young people.
Recording from the collection @ipswichmuseums at Christchurch mansions with the wise @jmc.anderson
Felt quite reverential. Being able to listen to the tiny sounds from these very special instruments was pretty magical. Really enjoyed the time.

Dope to be part of this incredible group. Especially now when Sri Lanka is facing such devastation. Working together, can bring so many good things. Simple right?
‘Beyond the Archive: Stitching and Sounding Sri Lanka’s Stories’ (2025) is on view at SET 91 until 7 December as part of the ‘Under Archives’ exhibition.

Twixt cup ‘n’ lip 2.1 was part of exhibition Being Redrawn @houseofannetta with an amazing group of artists brought together by @capturedpolity
The work invited play which was amplified in a number of ways. Was wicked to see kids playing for literally hours with my Frankenstein revised tea chest.
More pics of the full show to come. Thanks to everyone how came by.
