Clovelly & Carrington Rd Plaza, Randwick. Completed in 2024 the new plaza at the corner of Clovelly Road and Carrington Road has created a welcoming people oriented civic space where previously there was a slip road and parked cars. The brick paved plaza is separated from the main road by a level change, new endemic plantings, a retained Water Gum and the three steel arbours that recall the dinghies and fishing of nearby Gordons Bay. The arbours, seating and paving take on a circular geometry and organise the space into sub spaces with a clear hierarchy and legibility. The use of the circles builds a distinct language and identity for the plaza in the context of an intersection dominated by infrastructure. A diverse range of ground covers, shrubs, flowering climbers and small trees have been utilised to maximise habitat value. The rich palette has thrived during the warm and wet autumn season. European Heritage Award - Gardens of Peace project Public Choice Award: / We are pleased to announce the group of projects titled - Gardens of Peace, comprising of 29 peace gardens along the western front between Calais and Strasbourg, designed by representatives from the countries that fought there has received the European Heritage Award, supported by the European Commission, in the category “Citizens’ Engagement and Awareness-raising”. JMDd in collaboration with Chartier Dalix (Paris) designed the now completed Australian Peace Garden in Amiens as part of the wider project. We are asking your support for this very worthwhile project by voting for it in The Public Choice Award via the link above. After voting, you will receive a confirmation email - please make sure to confirm your vote, otherwise it will not be counted. In 2017, marking the centenary of the First World War, the association Art & Jardins | Hautsde-France launched the Gardens of Peace project (Jardins de la Paix) with the ambition of renewing how Europeans remember the conflict. Along the former Western Front, stretching from Belgium across northern and eastern France, memorials and military cemeteries already shaped the landscape. The project proposed a new approach: the creation of contemporary public gardens located on or near these historic sites, transforming former battlefields into living landscapes dedicated to reflection, dialogue and peace. Twenty-nine gardens have been created since 2018, each garden symbolically representing the twenty-one countries that fought on the Western Front, each garden being designed by Landscape Architects from that nation. Together, these gardens form Europe’s first landscaped Peace Pathway.

We are honoured to announce that Parramatta Square was awarded the National Award for Urban Design at this year's AILA National Landscape Architecture Awards. JMD design with TCL, Gehl and TZG @jmd.design @tcl_studio @gehlpeople @tzgarchitects @aila_national The judges commended that "Advocacy, collaboration and technical excellence have enabled generous soil zones above basement to sustain thriving tree canopies and greening. These aspects are complemented by the use of enduring natural materials, curated spaces and a holistic approach to wayfinding, art, and the design of urban elements." In 2022 JMDd worked with CreateNSW, NAS and FDC through a design construct process to refurbish part of the National Art School Courtyard. It has now settled in and the planting has established. The project works to highlight the unique quality and atmosphere of the site whilst catering for its functional requirements that range from student life to public events and various pedestrian and vehicular movements. Subtle changes in pavement format signal different uses, whilst alongside Building 23 the heritage sandstone pavement is preserved. The courtyard upgrade works formed part of a larger preservation and restoration project that included the replacement of a number of large sandstone parapet pieces, some of which were utilised as seating edges in the courtyard works. @nas_au @creatensw @fdc_group

Parramatta Social Capital The belief that civic space should represent and accommodate the diversity of our population in the simple acts of everyday social life has been a powerful thread running through our work. Initially at Centenary Square and later in the adjacent Parramatta Square our design has provided a formal setting for - the Town Hall, Church, Library, Train station Concourse, Corporate - and a flexible space for more intimate gatherings and incidental lingering by less defined cultural groups than the institutional. 📸 @brettboardmanphotography @walkercorporation @tcl_studio @tzgarchitects @gehlpeople

JMDd have over a period of more than 20 years worked to upgrade and transform existing parks and harbourside industrial land along Rozelle and Blackwattle Bays in Glebe into high quality public open space. The foreshore and associated parks, mostly on land reclamation dating from the 19th century, provide 2.7km of finely crafted harbour edge walk, 16Ha of open space, 3 playgrounds, a skate park, a foreshore habitat, a constructed mangrove, freshwater soaks, rain gardens and extensive tree cover. The existing fabric was the starting point around which an approach to the project was developed. By recognising the value of the “as found”, the project acknowledged the site’s history, and attributed value where previously little was found. The outcome is a project that foregrounds the role of the human hand in constructing and caring for self-organising habitats, and framing this as an essential component of the urban landscape.

JMDd aim to design for the complex, nonlinear and inextricably intertwined connection between functioning landscapes, water, solar & mineral cycles, biodiverse ecosystems and the human management of these elements.  Recently, our team has been researching the soil food web mechanisms to include in the regenerative protocols for our projects. We are designing to support the indigenous micro-organisms in order to maximise the performance of natural landscape processes.

JMD design, in collaboration with architects @chartierdalix , were honoured to be engaged by @art_jardins_hdf following a national competition to design an Australian ‘Garden of Peace’, as part of their series of unique landscape projects built on the emblematic sites of remembrance of the First World War. The resulting garden, located in Amiens, France, pays tribute to ANZAC soldiers who fought in the Somme region during this period. Mounds and boulders create informal pathways inspired by the wartime trenched landscape of WW1, that guide visitors towards a restful centre enclosed by burnt timber walls. The archipelago of planted islands symbolises the many involved cultures, simultaneously fragmented and brought together in the common cause of the allied forces. The atmosphere of undergrowth, characteristic of the canyon bottoms of Wollemi National Park, combined with the red soil of the Australian desert, provides a space for both paying respect and contemplation. 📷@yannmonel (slides 1 & 2) and @comp_harrison (slide 3)
