I have been landing back in my current home in SE London after spending 3 weeks in Scilly/Cornwall for the R&D of ‘HOW LOUD THIS LOUD’, funded by
@aceagrams and
@feast_cornwall .
I have written the first draft of the longest thing I have ever written, which I’ve come to realise is a play.
It’s about being lost, lost lands, a lost boy, burials, ageing, silly rituals, community, and trying to press contemporary language onto ancient things and failing.
There’s lots I’d love to share with you, so it’s coming in parts…
Scilly 🌊
We recorded the sounds underneath countless post-storm fallen trees, the insides of ancient burial chambers, electromagnetic lighthouse waves, sand hoppers… (
@beechey.noise , thank you so much for your generosity in lending us this amazing kit to play with)
We looked at the Iron Age Bryher warrior’s sword and mirror up close in all its ancient glory (huge thanks to
@iosculturalcentreandmuseum ). We imagined the mythical land of Lyonesse in the sea beneath us whilst crossing on the Scillonian ferry.
We connected with people, some of whom I went to school with, through the story I’m writing. We wrote myths and made bells together. Jack
@oldtowninnscilly , thank you for hosting our workshop in the pub my late grandad built years ago.
All on St Mary’s, the island where I grew up, fuelled by my mum’s cooking, my auntie’s jam doughnuts, and of course (& always) the sea surrounding us.
@ellieroser &
@chlo_christian , producer/designer and director – thank you for this opportunity to make something together, for believing in my writing and the characters, images, feelings and stories we’ve built. We started with a feeling of wanting to disrupt ideas of metronormativity and explore our connection as queer people to land, myth and ancientness. I feel the deepest into that work I’ve ever felt. Thank you 💚
