DIANE VON FURSTENBERG, NYC - This shot of
@dvf is one of my favorite environmental portraits I’ve ever taken, and that’s for a few reasons. This shoot is the convergence of a client putting me in a winning spot, a subject being open to more access than we initially agreed on, and my having the flexibility and awareness to seize the opportunity in front of me. When the Washington Post sent me to take a portrait of Diane, we had really only agreed on a session in her office. It went well, but DVF played it close to the vest. I had no idea what she thought of me. But I knew she was off to do a couple of events and it would be amazing to tag along. We were kind of just standing there while she was getting ready to go, and next thing I know, I was invited to jump into her car. She was on the phone, being a boss, and I snapped a couple of pictures. She told me, “I think you got it,” and I knew I had. Her pose and expression is an honest and authentic exploration of who she is. It was an honor to take it. We ended up at the Bowie Exhibit in Brooklyn, and she broke out some unbelievable Bowie and Jagger stories. A nice day’s work. - Jesse
