I’m incredibly proud to be named a recipient of the American Society for Peripheral Nerve (ASPN) Travel Fellowship 2026!
It’s a true privilege to be recognized alongside such an inspiring group of nerve surgeon colleagues who are shaping the future of peripheral nerve surgery.
I’m looking forward to learning from brilliant mentors around the world, sharing ideas, and bringing back new insights to elevate the care we provide to our patients.
Thank you to ASPN for this meaningful opportunity—and to all the mentors and peers who continue to inspire me along the way. The journey continues!

✨ ASPN Traveling Fellowship 2026 ✨ Dr. Lisa Gfrerer, MD, PhD, @lisagfrerer@weillcornell from Weill Cornell Medicine visited UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she spent a week visiting Dr. Shai Rozen, MD, @drshairozen as part of her first stop as the 2026 ASPN Traveling Fellow! During her visit, Dr. Rozen shared his expertise in facial nerve reanimation, offering an incredible opportunity for collaboration, learning, and mentorship in peripheral nerve surgery. This is only the beginning, so stay tuned for the next stop on Dr. Gfrerer’s traveling fellowship journey! 🌍✈️

The first BIG APPLE Nerve Course 🍎 We enjoyed uniting all #nervenerds in NYC and surrounding areas at NYU yesterday and discuss all things nerve including nerve transfers, FFMT, spasticity, and breast innervation with cadaver dissection time. A course for in the books! See you next year 👋🏼
Over multiple trips I have experienced the Nā Pali Coast from the air, by boat, and now finally on foot.
Nothing compares to the trail Kalalau trail itself ✨
22 miles over two days through mud, river crossings, narrow cliffs, beach camping and views so unreal they barely look real.
Easily makes my top 10 hikes of all time, put it on your list!

🔥Hot off the press for patients with Occipital Neuralgia and chronic migraines/headaches:
Muscle fascia may be more important mediating pain than we thought:
In our study, we analyzed trapezius fascia samples from patients with occipital neuralgia and compared them to control patient tissue.
What we found was striking:
• The trapezius fascia is richly innervated
• Patients with ON showed a 71% increase in nociceptive nerve fibers that mediate pain
• There was significant upregulation of CGRP, a key mediator of pain signaling and a key target of migraine drugs
These findings suggest that the trapezius fascia is not just structural tissue — it may play a direct role in pain generation and peripheral sensitization which has never been shown.
Understanding this neurobiology may help guide future targeted treatments for nerve-related headache pain.
Congratulations to the whole team @drjayausten@tereshenko_md@giuliamonnink@merelhazewinkel@katyaremy@chucklesincharge

Honored to be included in Castle Connolly Top Doctors, recognizing the top 7% of peer-reviewed physicians nationwide.
Caring for patients with nerve conditions is one of the most rewarding parts of my practice. If you’re dealing with a nerve-related problem, I’m happy to help:
• Headaches caused by nerve compression (headache surgery)
• Restoration of sensation during prophylactic, cancer, or gender-affirming mastectomy
• Restoration of sensation and movement after nerve injury (e.g., facial paralysis/Bell’s palsy, foot drop, brachial plexus injury)
• Nerve pain caused by nerve compression or injury
Given my expertise in facial anatomy and nerve preservation, I also perform aesthetic facial surgery, including deep plane facelifts — always guided by my mantra: keeping nerves and patients happy ✨
To all the incredible women and men before us who created the space in which we thrive in today- thank you.
Grateful for the brilliant women leading, operating, innovating, and mentoring every day — and for the men who stand with us in support of our shared mission.
Equally grateful to see you living your truth unapologetically with confidence, style and pride and having so much fun along the way.
To our students and trainees — we’re learning, growing, and building the future together. I’m proud to be on this journey with you.
