Phytograms [2026]

Phytograms are a kind of ‘chemilumen’ cameraless black & white paper print where the plant develops itself into the image (with a little help from ‘eco-conscious’ kitchen chemicals).
A first experiment using garden flora: a ‘weed’, a rhizomal super spreader and a dropped bloom alongside vitamin C & soda ash (fizzy joy! CO2 released in the vicinity of the remaining plants: hopefully they appreciated it…) with ‘slow’ hypo fix (the stuff you de-chlorinate aquarium water with) for a fairly situated practice.
A fun afternoon in the sun but I’m not sure I have the delicacy of touch and patience required for beautiful results…
And now I have steel wool rusting in the wash water and dev that wouldn’t neutralise with lemons alone (citric acid added) but at least the fix lives to fight another day…

First Impressions
Just reflecting on a wonderful residency last week with @suffolk_community_libraries . Wonderfully looked after and working with 5 extraordinary artists .
An opportunity to try #lumen prints for the first time, visit the stunning @swtcarltonmarshes and reconnect with play: having fun with mud painting!
And a big thank you to @lowestoft.library , as well as Aldeburgh and Leiston libraries - maps!
