I will forever stand for justice. For free speech, for science, for women, for trans people and for diversity. For clean water, community, accessibility and the health of the planet I’m giving to my daughter. For the record, most of those words above are now banned from communications by the current US administration below. They’ve done that in efforts to hope that they do not exist. Like a scared child covering their ears, petrified of the unknown. I’ve never heard of smaller, weaker men than those who fear words, ideas and people different than themselves. Censorship isn’t just protecting the weak, it’s curating obedience. Honoured to assist in the design and fabrication of Undersight for Cassils. From ARTFORUM: “On October 4, for twelve hours, from sunset to sunrise, Cassils projected powerful intermittent light beams into the night sky. Visible for miles around, these blasts of light were Morse code translations of a list of words deemed ‘suspect’ by US federal agencies since Trump returned to office in January . . . [and] scrubbed from US government websites and documents,” writes Gayatri Gopinath of Cassils’s latest durational performance, Undersight. “For Cassils, beaming these banned words into the night sky using an anachronistic system of encryption is not simply a distress signal. OK y’all. I’m turning 50 years old on Friday. For my birthday, I want to share a new artwork with you. Art is the most important thing in my life and I’m glad to have had the opportunity to make it for 50 years. From sunset to sunrise I am premiering a. new twelve-hour durational performance in Toronto Canada OCT 4th. Undersight shines light on the insidious nature of censorship by utilizing the medium of light and the night sky as a democratic canvas. “Undersight” is the inverse of oversight. Inverse surveillance is a subset of “sousveillance” with an emphasis on “watchful vigilance from underneath” and asks the question “Who watches the watchers?” Throughout the performance I burn a massive beam of light into the sky and use Morse code, transmits a list of words deemed “suspect” by US federal agencies. This growing list is being scrubbed from US government websites and documents in an attempt to remove all references not only to gender, sexuality, diversity, equity and inclusion, but also to myriad issues such as climate change and vaccines. Globally trans people are having their rights stripped and being deprived of legal status, healthcare, safety and anti-discrimination protections. In the United States this attack on trans communities extends more broadly: international students are being deported and people are losing their jobs because they engage in constitutionally protected political expression. This work suggests that trans rights must be linked with all of our other political movements. Undersight is created in a tradition of disenfranchised communities who work in solidarity to liberate ourselves from systems and regimes that deny us our humanity. “Our resistance is not predicated on how likely it will be to alter the conscience of the oppressor. Making films is a wild ride. Sometimes you get to make something so beautiful and moving that you want to keep making things with those people for a really long time. Sometimes those people turn out to be your friends. I’m honoured to share this story, about a man who builds a shuttle to fly to space to steal a piece of the sun for his dying wife.
