At #HearthSummit2025, @secsmiles and @jarrcher invited us into a space of deep presence and shared emotion through a performance woven with poetic vocals and rich, resonant piano.
Their music didn’t just fill the room—it connected us. It reminded us how art can soften the edges, open us to one another, and create the kind of trust and belonging that makes real community possible.

We all have those moments, the beautiful ones we wish we could freeze forever.
@secsmiles & @jarrcher song, "Hanging on to Time", is a gorgeous musical response to that feeling. It was inspired by Robert Frost's poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay," which captures the bittersweet truth that all precious things are fleeting.
It’s an invitation to shift your perspective. It reminds us: "We must welcome change… Embrace what comes our way.”

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is admit we're not okay. To stop holding it together. To find others who know that grief isn't something to fix—it's something to honor.
Join us for a Virtual Candlelight Vigil on Nov 5th with poets James Crews and Kai Coggin, alongside vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles and pianist Jarrett Cherner. James will share poetry from his book Turning Toward Grief that honors the weight we carry in ordinary moments, while Kai offers permission to release all those years of just surviving. Sarah and Jarrett will lead us through a musical honor ceremony.

You don't have to be okay. You just have to show up. Let's remind each other that our pain deserves witness.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles and pianist Jarrett Cherner will host an intimate and open-hearted wellbeing concert on Thursday, February 15. The concert features Charles’s multilayered vocals and Cherner’s emotionally rich piano playing in a live jazz performance—a musical exploration of mindfulness and self-care. The duo’s debut project, Tone, touches on themes embedded in “being kind to and loving oneself” and then encourages the audience to share that loving-kindness outward into the world.
This well-being concert will include guided breath work and moments for reflection, as well as open space for individual sharing facilitated by the Director of Yale College Wellness Programs, Corinne Coia. This event is presented in partnership with the Good Life Center.
Looking forward to some duo shows with @secsmiles next week. Hope some of you can join us in person IRL! We’ll be presenting music from Tone, our 2020 debut album.

NEW RELEASE: Sarah Elizabeth Charles and Jarrett Cherner are thrilled to announce the November 6, 2020 release of TONE via BaldHill Records.
The album’s eight original songs — finely wrought, emotive, richly melodic — were co-written over a span of four years, and although Charles and Cherner began recording before the Covid-19 crisis, they were finally able to finish the project in quarantine in their Brooklyn home. Fittingly, the sound of this duo is intimate and warm, yet its dynamic range is large. Cherner’s expansive piano harmonies, Charles’ intricate multi-tracked vocal parts and subtly placed echoes and effects: these elements grow to fill the sonic space, as the songs touch on transcendent themes of selfless love and living with purpose and intention.

Bandleaders, want to bring your project to South America in January 2020? Check out the info below for a cool opportunity through Movimiento Cultural Jazz a la Calle in Mercedes, Uruguay. The submission process is a bit cumbersome, but I've tried to outline the steps clearly below.
It's worth noting that this is NOT a paid gig, but if selected, travel expenses, lodging, and food are all covered. That being said, I've been a few times and it's always been a rewarding experience. It's helpful to know what you're getting into so feel free to ask me any questions about it... (Also, this is NOT the jazz festival in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, which happens around the same time.) See comments for the info from Jazz A La Calle...
