For the piece Songe, artist Alice Riehl turns to the passionflower to explore female desire in full bloom. The title nods to two sources: the ancient myth of Dibutade, a woman so devoted to her lover that she traced his shadow on a wall before he left — only for her father to remake it in clay and claim credit for inventing sculpture. And Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, where desire blurs the line between reality and illusion, until marriage steps in to restore order.
Riehl flips the script. In Songe, pink isn't passive; it's a force. And female desire blooms on its own terms.
