Cactus ➡️ Clouds has been a bucket list hike of mine for quite some time.
Climbing from the desert of Palm Springs to the peak of San Jacinto in 15 unrelenting miles was a journey that tested our minds, bodies, and hearts.
We were fortunate to make the peak as the sun set and cast a biblical shadow over the valley below. It made all the fumbling through melting snow worth each step / fall.
The last 5 miles we descended into the darkness and stillness of the snow covered round valley to the comfort of the Ariel tramway which took us the rest of the way down.
Grateful for the mountain, fellow hikers, and the trail god himself, James!! (And of course the German pancake the next morning 😅)
So excited to announce issue #45 of @beforesmag magazine. It’s a HUGE 157-page deep dive on @sinnersmovie .
For the first time, we were able to talk to a wide variety of crew members, as well as the visual effects team led by @michael.ralla.vfx .
Bringing the vampires to life, and then orchestrating Michael B. Jordan as twins, were, unsurprisingly, two of Sinners’ principal effects challenges. What’s more, director Ryan Coogler and cinematographer @addp chose to shoot on 65mm film using a combination of IMAX 15-perf and Ultra Panavision 70 cameras, bringing additional challenges for the VFX teams in terms of the need to follow more traditional film workflows.
The film would ultimately feature 1013 visual effects shots overseen by visual effects supervisor Michael Ralla and visual effects producer @jamesalexandervisualeffects and crafted by @stormstudiosvfx , @rspvfx , @ilmvfx , Base FX, @lightvfxstudio , @outpostvfx , TFX and an in-house team. Baraboom Studios carried out previsualization services.
The issue also goes deep on @mikefontaine_ ’s practical make-up effects work.

Had an amazing @sinnersmovie post-screening Q&A with Rob Bredow (SVP, Creative Innovation, Digital Production & Technology, Lucasfilm) @rbredow at IMAX HQ in Playa Vista - watching the 70 mm IMAX print in that room hits different, and every single time I see it I’m blown away all over again.
