Moving Image workshop!
In this lab, we were tasked with creating a moving image that connected to our current assignment called Personal Professional Practice (PPP). Rather than working from a fixed subject, my PPP draws inspiration from the 1980s, a decade I frequently reference in my work due to my love of its music and fashion.
For this moving image, I used a vinyl record from my own collection by one of my favourite bands, Culture Club. Using stop-motion, I animated archival images from the 1980s around the spinning record. These images depict people fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, directly linking to the song and music video “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” from the same album.
The original music video represents outsider identity and vulnerability, particularly in relation to gender nonconformity and emotional pain. Boy George is shown as isolated, moving through spaces such as a courtroom and prison, symbolising judgment and persecution. By referencing these themes, my moving image reflects how individuals within the LGBTQ+ community have historically been made to feel - scrutinised, marginalised, and misunderstood. Who then those people fought back and protested for the rights to live peacefully.
