I am excited to share with you my new comic, The House My Father Built, inspired by the life of Sophie Shamieh Mukarker. Nakba 1948, Sophie was one of thousands of Palestinians who were forcibly evicted from their homes in the Old City of Jerusalem by Zionist gangs. It has been a real privilege to write/draw this comic, thank you to Sophie and the entire Mukarker family for entrusting me with telling Sophie’s story. @comicsyouth asked me to share a moment when I could have 'given up' on my creative dream, but didn't, and it took me straight back to 2018(ISH) when running the shop felt harder and harder and I thought it was gonna be the end šŸ’” but it was just a change in direction and led to the thing I actually always wanted to do (it just took a while to realise!) Thanks so much @itsrayning_ for asking me to contribute! #youngcomicslaureate #scribblethroughthestruggle

A few years ago, I experienced a huge creative block while trying to build new portfolio work with no project lined up. I had lots of feedback, but the pressure to get it ā€˜right’ paralysed me. I tried to follow every piece of advice, paid too much attention to instagram likes, and my work started to feel confused and not like mine. The last thing I wanted to do was to take time out, but ultimately, I needed to switch lanes and reduce the pressure. I picked up more part-time work, and looked for inspiration outside illustration- in films, on walks, with friends. When I drew, I started by ignoring what might make ā€˜a good portfolio piece’ and indulged in subjects I loved to draw, which led to new stories and discoveries about my style. Not long after, an email arrived about exciting collaborative graphic novel project! It wasn’t easy, and this way of thinking is something I still work at. But I wanted to say, that it can be tough to deal with the ups and downs of freelancing, but it isn’t giving up or taking a step backwards to have a side gig or pause for a bit. Sometimes it can be exactly what your creativity needs! …. Thank you Young Comics Laureate @itsrayning_ @comicsyouth for inviting me to take part in your campaign #ScribbleThroughTheStruggle and share what motivated me to keep going through my creative wobbles. It’s been really inspiring to read all the posts already shared through the campaign šŸ’› #youngcomicslaureate #scribblethroughthestruggle

My turn! Leaving uni, life hit me in the face a bit. I couldn’t shift the feeling that this is what being an adult was just gonna be like, and my fantasy of sitting and drawing in cafes in the sun for a job was just mental. But I can tell you now, that is exactly what my job is. It’s taken a lot of navigating and I’ve worked a lot of other jobs along the way, but since Nov last year I am officially a full time freelancer. That might change, but that’s ok - I will always squirrel away making things because it’s who I am. If you love it, find it in the small pockets of your day and keep it going, until those small pockets resemble full blown Eddie Stobarts. @comicsyouth #scribblethroughthestruggle #youngcomicslaureate

I'm happy to take part in the Young Comics Laureate, @itsrayning_ 's campaign, sharing a time when I felt a bit lost with my drawing! More or less the whole of my 20s... And to answer this prompt myself - I've tried gouache a little, but am fairly inept and would love to work more with that! Thank you @itsrayning_ and @comicsyouth for asking me to take part in #scribblethroughthestruggle ! #youngcomicslaureate
