Last night, RCO YOUNG 2025 opened the fourth movement of Shostakovich’s Fifth like a thunderclap, bursting with relentless power and energy. That electrifying sound filled the Main Hall of the @concertgebouw under the expert direction of Elim Chan (@itselimchan ).
What makes this performance even more remarkable is the journey behind it. In less than three weeks, these young musicians from across Europe grew into a single, united orchestra, reaching a level of quality and intensity that left us proud and baffled. The future looks bright!

Following atmospheric excerpts from Shostakovich’s Hamlet and Berlioz’s rarely performed Tristia, the second half was highlighted by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 “Babi Yar”, performed together with the Singverein and bass Alexander Vinogradov, bringing out the power this work requires.

Last night we were led by the brilliant Elim Chan: always a joy to welcome her back to the podium.
We enjoyed the world premiere from one of Britain’s finest composers: Colin Matthews' Oboe Concerto performed by our Principal Oboe, the wonderful Olivier Stankiewicz. 🎼
What followed was a folk-inspired celebration of dance by Bartók, plus Rachmaninoff’s late and great orchestral showstopper. It was an evening of magnificent music! 🎉

Getting to the bottom of Elgar’s Enigma may not be easy, but it’s certainly easy to grow fond of it, especially under the baton of Elim Chan. 🎶 The same goes for Ravel’s Mother Goose and Prokofiev as performed by Evgeny Kissin.
