Happy 70th birthday to @zenadeluce Since I was little, people who know my mother have felt an urgency to tell me what they think of her. I forget it isn’t normal to constantly hear, “your mother is ___.” Wild, smart, generous, stylish, hilarious, fun, caring. She commands respect and gives so much of herself. I like to call her the Mayor of Shoreline Circle because she knows every neighbour by name and exactly what they’re up to at any point in time. And they LOVE her in return. When we moved there, we had neighbours who didn’t speak much English and were disliked for being closed off and “not disposing their garbage properly.” From my bedroom window, I watched Zena have a brief exchange with them, and later that night they dropped off a delicious plate of Kabuli Pulao. Sometimes I’m convinced she’s a Bene Gesserit, but really, she’s just compassionate. This lady can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. Leading by example, she taught me that the secret sauce is working your ass off while being transparent and caring for people. If she decided to become a film producer, she’d be running Hollywood by now. I owe everything to this woman, and today we celebrate her 70th year on this planet. I love you, Mom!
