"The Scoriae of the Bomb" [2025], Sophie Chalmin @so.ma.je "The Scoriae of the Bomb" investigates the lasting legacy of French nuclear tests conducted in the Algerian Sahara between 1960 and 1966. This secret military programme left lasting contamination, inherited illnesses, and ecological devastation, which continue to affect local communities. The copper imported by the French, and still used in local crafts, carries radioactive residue, becoming a material witness to this slow colonial violence. Developed in collaboration with French and Algerian NGOs, activists, and journalists, the project challenges dominant French narratives through a counter-archive grounded in non-Western, collective approaches to justice. A handcrafted copper fountain invites memorial, a documentary exposes the lack of compensation for the Algerian victims, and booklets critique current reparation systems while proposing alternatives. Referencing "scoriae" — the fused black rock created by the explosions — the work reflects on what remains: contaminated matter, damaged bodies, and the violent legacy of colonialism. "Kuchen de Manzana" [2025], Catalina Gómez Alvarez @catalina_gomez_alvarez "Kuchen de Manzana" is a multimedia installation that examines how everyday culinary traditions normalise colonial histories and racial ideologies in Chile. The project uses apple cake, Kuchen de Manzana, as both subject and lens to explore the legacy of German settlement in indigenous Mapuche territories. Drawing on personal narrative, historical research, and interviews with decolonial thinkers, the work examines how seemingly innocuous ingredients like wheat and sugar embody histories of land appropriation, labour exploitation, and Whiteness as a social ideal.
