And that’s a wrap!
We started the year strong with interplay_2026 live online performance festival, followed by workshops in collaboration with New Works XR led by interplay_ artists. To wrap up the season, we gathered at The Cinematheque for the world premiere of THE BORDER, a film by Ying Wang, that was such a powerful way to come together as a community.
It’s been an honour to present these events and opportunities, and to give back to the community that continues to show up.
interplay_2026 was co-curated by Michael Caldwell, Caroline Chien-MacCaull, Sammy Chien-MacCaull, Gemma Crowe and Deanna Peters.
Presented by Chimerik 似不像 In partnership with New Works XR With support from SummerWorks, BC Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and City of Vancouver.
Thank you for supporting all the amazing artists and collaborators. We’re already looking forward to the next edition, keep an eye on this page for more upcoming community events/activations.<3

From a sanctuary of reunion to a site of sudden closure, THE BORDER explores a border park between the US and Canada as families, friends, and displaced souls navigate political change and the loss of one of the last shared spaces between two nations.
THE BORDER is the newest feature film by Ying Wang, multi-award-winning filmmaker and co-founder of Cinevolution Media Arts Society. Filmed between 2020–2024 and centered on Peace Arch Park, THE BORDER traces how this liminal space transformed during and after the pandemic, capturing the emotional and political afterlife of a suddenly sealed border while offering a timely reflection on the fragility of freedom.

Today Jan 11 at 6pm PST, marks the closing performance of Program 2 of interplay_2026 @interplay_arts and the final night of the festival’s online performance program. The works featured integrate playful audience interaction with existential philosophy responses, live DIY sound art in home-style performance settings, and Iranian diaspora storytelling through intimate desktop performances that unfold gently and powerfully in real time.
This moment feels especially important given the current reality in Iran, where recent government-imposed blackouts have cut off phone and internet communication between Iran and the outside world. We stand in solidarity with Iranian citizens and Iranian-Canadians who are deeply impacted by this disconnection from their families and communities. We hope you’ll show up to support the Iranian artists in this program and help further amplify their voices during such a critical time.
Jan 11 · 6pm PST (Sunday) Program 2:
Elliot Vaughan - Existential Hotline @iffy.south
Vincent Isabel - Empathie infonctionnelle [sound observations] @4rtvisa
Niloufar Samadi w/ Avideh Saadatpajouh - Glitch Under the Skin @nilsamadi@where_the_dada_is
Sharing sneak peak from our opening night, you can see how easy it is to tune in on your Zoom to watch the show!
If ticket price is a barrier, please don’t be shy to reach out. We’d love for more people to join us in supporting the artists, witnessing what they’ve created, and celebrating the closing night of the festival’s online component.
