112 years ago this month, Guru Nanak Jahaz (Komagata Maru) steamship arrived in Vancouverās Burrard Inlet, carrying 376 Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu passengers from the Punjab region of British India.
Despite being British subjects, they were denied entry into Canada based on racist laws.
A memorial commemorating the incident was unveiled in 2012, but repeated vandalism resulted in shattering of the memorialās glass panels.
After consulting with the community, Park Board staff updated and enhanced the panelās content, and replaced the glass with metal, improving durability and safety.
