My advance copy of Surf Shacks Vol.3 finally arrived last week. Wowie — I cannot believe this passion project is now a trilogy! With everything going on in the world right now, it can sometimes feel superficial to celebrate another product completed. But it also feels so good to have something simple like a book to slow down, hold, sit with, and enjoy. I am very grateful to see this “work” I’ve dedicated so much time to make its way into the world. After Vol.2, it took me a while to find the motivation to keep going with this project. But inspiration has a way of sneaking back in. Slowly, the desire to meet new people, explore new places, and tell new stories returned. And with it came a reminder of why I started this series in the first place. So here we are—Volume 3. New faces, new places, same heart. These are creative surfers who inspire me not just because of how they ride waves, but because of what they build, grow, shape, write, and care about when they’re back on land. Much love and gratitude to all who have contributed to this project over the years. To all who have inspired me through authentically living their lives, holding their own, staying true to themselves, sharing their gifts with love, paving the way for others to follow, and making themselves worthy of imitation. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on my own personal journey and carried me through hard times. I hope to serve you and others in kind someday. The generosity of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me. Thank you, SURFING 🌊🌊🌊, for the endless teachings that translate to all aspects of life. My hope is that somewhere in the pages of this book you feel an invitation to follow what makes you feel most alive, to shape your own version of home, and to build a life that is entirely, unapologetically your own. Thank you, universe !!! - Matt Titone You can now order all 3 #SurfShacks books via Gestalten.com — the official release date for Vol.3 is 5/26 If you’re interested in wholesale, please contact [email protected] ✌️

Year 1 for Indoek gallery is in the books! 6 shows, 42 artists, 10 musical acts, clothing collections with @jungmaven and @outerknown — and high vibes all around for our local creative community. Today is the last day we’re open for a couple weeks til our next exhibit opens, hope you can stop by to say hey. Here’s a lil visual highlight reel from our first year as a gallery and a brief history: Indoek has been a home for the surfy passion projects of our design studio @italicstudio since 2012. We started as a blog back in 2010, then evolved into a publisher of original content, and our Surf Shacks books became our calling card. I personally always wondered what the Indoek brand would look like if it were a physical space. Since celebrating artists and inspiring creatives has always been our goal, a gallery just made perfect sense. So when my friend @fischerrman invited us to join his shared studio space at @bellartsfactory in 2022, I knew there was more potential there to develop our next chapter as a brand: a space that serves primarily as an art gallery and creative hub in Ventura County, California. Since then we’ve been figuring it out as we go. Luckily we found the perfect person to manage it: @rachel_cano who you will likely interact with when visiting the space. Most of the artists we’ve worked with so far are good friends and people whose work has inspired us over the years. It’s a formula we’re committed to with all future programming. Big thanks to all the artists, vendors, musicians, sponsors, patrons, friends, family, neighbors, everyone who has helped support us thus far and keep this tiny ship afloat. There are too many to mention here, but you know who you are. As cliche as it sounds, it truly takes a village. We’re honored to be here and call Ventura County our home. Vids by @_ryderalves_ and the last slide is yours truly posing for an early morning test shot by @scottsoens — it’s raw and unflattering, but kinda sums up how tired I felt all year haha. Looking forward to “celebrating coastal creative culture” through our space again in 2024. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming exhibits! ✌️ / Matt

#SurfShacks Vol. 3 is now available for preorder!!! To celebrate our new book, we are featuring stories from @surfshacksbook Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 books here on the gram. Shown here: the mobile #vanlife home of @dylangraves back in 2014. The following is an excerpt from the book: What’s the story on the van and why’d you get it? I’ve always wanted a van. I’ve always just kinda wanted to go wherever I wanted to go and do whatever I want to do. So it’s the vehicle for that. I got it three and half months ago in California off Craigslist. Me and Nolan Hall were looking at a bunch of different vans. He has a van and he was trying to help me out. We found this van and I bought it. It’s a 2008 Dodge 2500 Sprinter Van with a V6 engine. Were you planning an East Coast trip when you bought it? When I was buying the van I didn’t know I would be coming to the East Coast yet. This just kind of hap- pened. Once I got the van I was like, “Well, shit, might as well drive over and try to spend hurricane season get- ting some waves.” I pitched an idea to Surfing Magazine and they we’re psyched, so we just kind of rolled with it and charged over. Got my buddy Dave [Malcolm] to jump in and we drove across, and we’ve just been trying to film stuff and surf and do whatever. Do you sleep in the van every night? Yeah, I pretty much slept in the van every night on this trip. We’d park it in front of our friends’ houses so we’d have access to bathrooms and whatnot and couches for overflow. I was sleeping in the van most of the time by myself, and then sometimes if we didn’t have a friend to stay with or we were trying to make it somewhere fast, we’d all sleep in the van on the side of the road. The van has three beds. Read / see more from this story in Surf Shacks Vol. 1 — available on Indoek.com or wherever rad books are sold! #SurfShacks Vol. 3 is now available for preorder!!! To celebrate our new book, we are featuring stories from @surfshacksbook Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 books here on the gram. Shown here: the eclectic Floridian home of @tywillyums back in 2015. The following is an excerpt from the book: What are your favorite parts about St. Augustine and the area in which you live? St. Augustine is considered the oldest inhabited city in the US, and it provides so much history and beautiful European architecture. I can bike or walk almost any where and definitely to all of my favorite places. It also has a strong, young creative community. St. Augustine is a refreshing place to call home, and with the Jacksonville airport only an hour away, it makes it easy to fill my travel bug or get out of town for a big-city fix. What have been your biggest challenges and rewards as an artist? For me, seeing value in my work and being clear about what I want has been a huge hurdle. Unless you value your work and process, why should anyone else? I have also had to overcome procrastination and stop comparing myself to others. On the other hand, meeting people, making connections, and building relationships because of my work is one of the biggest rewards. My work also allows me to travel and participate in charitable art projects and international art shows. Not to mention I have flexible hours (so I can sneak in the odd surf trip). Last couple weeks to check out “Yes, And” by @scottchenoweth at @indoek Artist statement: “Yes, And” features new North American landscape paintings created during a seven-month solo road trip covering 31 states, two countries, and 3,196 miles. Inspired by the improvisational idea of replacing “but” with “yes, and,” the project embraces openess, curiosity, and the belief that any moment can expand into a new adenture. I wanted to let the locations dictate the style and I found comfort in bold, design-focused compositions that emphasize the spirit of exploration on the canvas just as much as behind the wheel. As a result, the paintings suggest the essence of an environment, inviting viewers to complete the landscape through their own perception and experience rather than a literal representation. We still have many pieces available, but they are moving fast. Please email [email protected] for the catalog of works and for all art buying inquiries. The gallery is open Thursday thru Sunday from 12–5p Indoek 83 S Palm St. Ventura, CA

From @surfshacksbook Vol.3: a magical Hawaiian home designed and built by @jaynelsonstudio featured on @dwellmagazine “Jay Nelson is a dreamer who creates kid forts for grownups (and some for actual kids). I have been a fan of his aesthetic for decades now, but I was first exposed to his tree house installations and mobile experiments through @mollusksurfshop in San Francisco. Seeing that shop was like a dream come true for me—everything I loved about surfing and its connection to the arts encapsulated in a rootsy reinterpretation of a traditional surf shop. Jay’s architectural imprint helped define the shop’s now-iconic style. Mollusk opened their second location in Venice Beach, just down the street from where I bought my first home, a dilapidated foreclosure. When I renovated, I took direct inspiration from Jay’s imaginative body of work and focus on reclaimed wood. A few years later, as I began documenting creative surfers’ homes for my Surf Shacks book series, Jay’s projects became the inspirational North Star—it became like a scavenger hunt to find his projects and feature them. I showed his own home, in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood, in Vol.2, and the house he designed and built for Jess Bianchi and Malia Grace Mau on Kauai, featured in Vol.1, is still one of my favorites that I’ve covered over the years. Now 10 years later, that same project inspired this house on Molokai, designed and built for Hawaii local, waterman, and rancher Galen McCleary. It’s important to note that Jay doesn’t just design these homes. He builds them with his own hand-picked team of friends and curates all the materials, with every detail considered. Each of his case studies is special in that way—they feel like livable works of art. A lot of love goes into them, and it shows.” – Matt Titone, “Surf Shacks” author Check out the full article and interview with Jay + Galen on Dwell.com Surf Shacks Vol.3 is now available for preorder on Gestalten.com Photos: @marikoreed

#SurfShacks Vol. 3 is now available for preorder!!! To celebrate our new book, we are featuring stories from @surfshacksbook Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 books here on the gram. Shown here: the wilderness home of @boardcollector + @aloha_to_zen in Australia back in 2016. The following is an excerpt from the book: How did you guys end up living an hour outside of Sydney, next to Royal National Park? Damion: We are very lucky to have had the opportunity to live in both Australia and the US. Before we moved I used to complain about a lot of things in Oz. It took moving to California to open my eyes to the great things about Australia: the space, the light, the air, the clean water, empty beaches, and an abundance of waves. As soon as we returned to Sydney I knew I didn’t want to be in Bondi anymore, and we started looking around my favorite reef and pointbreaks on the South Coast. We found ourselves a cedar A-frame cabin that was built as a writers retreat in what was once a coal miner village in the Royal National Park. Do you feel like where you live is remote? It certainly feels remote, which is really wonderful, especially on the weekends. In reality, you can get a train from the station at the end of our street and be in the center of Sydney in 50 minutes. The closest wave to our house is a reef break that’s a 15-minute hike down a cliff to the beach. When you’re out there in the ocean staring back at the rainforest, you can be mistaken for thinking you’re many miles from civilization.
