I just received a zillion film photos back from the developer which included some shots from my trip around Karratha, Murujuga, Dampier and the North West Shelf. Here are a few of them 📸
My visit north happened the same month as my trip to the Northern Hemisphere, and ever since, I’ve been pondering the stark differences in the touristic experiences of (specifically) the Acropolis and Murujuga National Park - two sites of major cultural significance / AKA places that make you say WHOA out loud, on repeat.
In short, the differences are: Greece reveres and respects its 3,000-year-old ruins, whilst Australia shows zero respect for its 50,000+ year-old cultural treasures (which include ancient petroglyphs created by the oldest continuous living culture in the world who have special, spiritual connections to country that are of legally recognised importance).
I just read a piece written by
@hannahferguson___ (of
@cheekmedia.co ) who also visited the National Park recently - I’ve popped a link to her story in my bio. I completely agree that the landscape is jaw-droppingly spectacular, but moreover, I found Murujuga to be transformative. It’s a magical place deserving of the greatest respect.
**HOWEVER** we’ve allowed (encouraged?) large-scale fertiliser manufacture, destructive processing plants, and the BIGGEST fossil fuel operation IN AUSTRALIA to be co-located (very literally) with this ancient, irreplaceable, precious history. IT’S COMPLETELY BONKERS.
Something else - unrelated - that’s been rolling around my mind is that the town of Karratha (a short drive from the North West Shelf aka Gas Central) IS NOT CONNECTED TO MAINS GAS! All the homes and businesses run off gas cylinders. For some reason I found this completely unbelievable. Like, a total kick in the guts for the locals — imagine Woodside, with their cynical distain for the Australian public, chuckling, ‘Haha you can pay EXTRA for your gas, you fools!’.
Anyway - enjoy the pics, via
