Last year in Bali, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the rice farmers of Jatiluwih. The fields are sustained by the Subak irrigation system, a communal water network that has governed farming practices in the region for centuries and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, beautiful beyond belief.
Photographed over a single sunrise during monsoon season, this project is a series of portraits centred on the people who live and work within this system. It is a small study of labour, ritual, and continuity.
Featuring farmers: Ketut Widiana, I Nyoman Sukantri, Nengah Sulatra, Nyoman Suriani, Ketut Suani, I Wayan Suining, and Wayan Sunasih.
