Taking Stock — a 20-foot bronze installation by @cliffgartenstudio — was officially welcomed to the National Western Center, on the historic grounds of the former Denver Stockyards and during the National Western Stock Show, a gathering that has shaped Western identity since 1906. At first glance, the sculpture reads as familiar: a cowgirl and a bull. But look again. The figures merge, boundaries dissolve, and inherited myths start to unravel. Centering an Indigenous cowgirl within this landscape isn’t symbolic — it’s structural. It challenges who has traditionally been depicted, who has been omitted, and who gets to carry the weight of “Western” heroism. “I wanted to challenge the mythology of the West while still honoring its legacy,” says Garten. “The sculpture becomes a point of transformation — asking the viewer to engage with the complexity and evolving narratives of the place.” Thank you to all who joined us for the opening and to our partners @denverpublicart @denverarts @national.western.center @nationalwestern @cityofdenver for supporting a work that is equal parts monument and conversation.
