@robinrimbaud There are bands that shape a moment, and then there are bands that seem to shape the future. English experimental rock band This Heat (1976-1982) were unmistakably the latter. They were formed in London by multi-instrumentalists Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward and Gareth Williams. I still remember buying their debut album in about 1980 and can still listen to it today and be blown away by it. Their music almost felt like a transmission from somewhere ahead of its time, with tape experiments, fractured rhythms, political urgency, and a fearless approach to sound that blurred the lines between rock and pure sonic exploration. They only released two albums and an EP in their brief original run. Imagine Joy Division uniting with Bernard Parmegiani, whilst listening to PIL’s Metal Box and The Pop Group. They were dark, witty, unsettling, symphonic and aggressive. I never saw them live in their original days, but only when they briefly reformed with the playfully named This Is Not This Heat (2016-2019). I did, however, get to see The Camberwell Now (1982-1987), the group that splintered off from This Heat and they were truly awe inspiring live. Their music remains radical, handmade, questioning, and deeply human all at once, and proof that refusing to follow the rules can certainly lead to some absolutely unforgettable magic!
