@_blackartdistrikt returned to The Speakeasy at
@townhousevenice for a night beautiful music. An intimate room filled with some of Los Angeles’ most gifted musicians created the perfect setting for a celebration of Black artistry through improvisation, tribute, and soul.
Before the band took the stage,
@djkasemix framed the night with an incredible DJ set… an intentional appetizer that warmed the room and built anticipation for the main course. Her selections didn’t just fill space; they prepared the soul.
The unit featured
@thereugotis on saxophone,
@buddaonbass on bass and vocals,
@its_crawford on guitar,
@stevenceemartin on keys,
@wavesbywayne on drums, and
@iamrezon on percussion… a collective that moved with the cohesion of a seasoned ensemble. The Black Arts Distrikt set flowed effortlessly, stretching between groove and experimentation.
The tribute to D’Angelo became one of the night’s defining moments, with
@buddaonbass stepping forward vocally, delivering a soulful performance that honored the spirit of the original while making it fully his own.
But the night reached a different dimension when
@jimettarose took the stage. During her performance of “Black Museum,” she led the room in a chant… a powerful, rhythmic reminder of who we are. “BLACK.” The word echoed through from every corner of the space. Not whispered. Declared. Repeated until it felt less like a lyric and more like affirmation. The energy grew heavier, warmer… almost ancestral. It felt as though the past leaned in close, as if the spirits of those who built the culture gathered quietly among us. The chant became invocation. Pride. Memory. Presence.
The moment carried the cinematic weight of something sacred, reminiscent of the supernatural music scene portrayed in Sinners — where time bends, the veil feels thin, and roof caught on fire.
For those few minutes, it wasn’t just performance. It was reminder.
