‘In The Stars’, a multi-sensory work for six silos, six loudspeakers, and six singers.
Premiered 16.02.2025, Silo Park, The Second Aotearoa International Festival of Secret Sounds, Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa NZ
In the Stars draws inspiration from the spectral and spatial possibilities of contemporary organ music, as well as the medieval choral traditions of Hildegard von Bingen, a renowned seer, herbalist and composer who lived nearly 1,000 years ago. Taking place in Tāmaki Makaurau’s Silo Park, each silo was ‘activated’ by a speaker, turning the space into a kind of giant hybrid organ, which the audience could move through freely. Utilising field recordings, interlocking melodies and chordal clouds that traverse the sonic spectrum, this piece reflects upon 1,000 years of human experience. Cascading voices reverberated around electric melodies, circling and fluttering around the silo complex, as earth-rumbling bass from the organ drew from the depths. The piece, straddling both minimalism and maximalism in equal measure, hearkens to the cosmos asking a fundamental question: how much have we really changed over the millennia?
‘In the stars’ reads both as a love letter to how far we have come as a people and as a lament to how humanity continues to enact regressive violent ideologies upon each other and all life on earth. It is a reminder for us to bear witness to ourselves and each other and recognise a fundamental truth - we are made up of the same stardust that links everyone and everything in the universe.
Thank you to choristers Anita Clark, Anna Fällt, Allana Goldsmith, Chelsea Prastiti and Fergus Waveforms for your incredible performances. ✨
A very special thank you to Jeff Henderson for his vital belief in this project, for platforming it, and for his immense support throughout its development. Thanks to the Audio Foundation, my favourite refuge of sound in the whole world, to Sam, Grace, Tash and Matt. And thank you to Jessica Palalagi and the Arts Foundation for your ongoing support.
Attunement, 2018 in collaboration with Olivia Webb @olivia.webb.art
To this date one of my favourite collaborations! We created this work during our stay at the Toi Pōneke Sound Art Residency in Wellington, and then toured the work to the USA for NIME 2018.
8-channel sound (30-minute continuous loop), HD video (various durations). This project also includes a series of listening workshops and a publication.
Attunement is a collaborative project with Olivia Webb that explores new modes of listening and being with others in the world. The project was first presented in January 2018 as an exhibition (8-channel sound installation + 2-channel HD video) alongside public ‘listening’ workshops, talks, performances and a publication of listening exercises.
The project explores the process and ethics of listening and becoming attuned to others. The verb ‘attune’ usually describes the act of making something harmonious, as in the tuning of an instrument. Attunement is also a state of relation to an object, environment or other people. To become attuned is to engage in a two-way sympathetic and empathetic exchange. In this project, attunement is used as a technique for exploring ways of being with others in the world.
Vital to this exchange is the practice of embodied listening and what Pauline Oliveros calls deep listening. Listening is central to human interaction, yet habits within Western culture tend to privilege speech and being heard over listening to and receiving others; we are quick to neglect listening and disregard its significance.
We developed a series of performances and sound based exercises that involve an exchange of breath and voice. These performances follow simple instructions. For example: Breathe in time with somebody else, sustain this until it is a comfortable and natural breath for you. Sing along with somebody else, a melody that only they know, becoming the voice of another. These exercises and more are available for you to practice for yourself in the Attunement publication.

silent green presents: LAKE [sandbox] (@lake.errors ) marks the first edition of LAKE. It is conceived as an open environment for testing ideas and exploring collective listening through live electronic and audiovisual performance. Borrowing the term from computing, a sandbox describes a space where systems can be experimented with freely. In this edition, artists share the same space and develop the session together in real time, shaping sound, voice, electronics and image through attentive listening.

Reflecting on another year in sound :) had the privilege of joining some sick artists in making and performing, and here are some of those special moments 💜
2026 I’m unlocking the vault, lots new on the way x
Flo Wilson - @iamflowilson - is one of the finalists for this year's SOUNZ Contemporary Award, for their work 'In the Stars'. Beaming in from Berlin where they are working as a composer, tutor, and music technician, Flo talks about the story behind 'In the Stars', a site-specific work turning the silos at @mysilopark in Tāmaki Makaurau into a giant interactive organ. Complete with a choir of six singers who move around the space, 'In the Stars' gives the audience a fully immersive experience - stay tuned to the end to see what it was like to encounter this amazing work!

I cannot emphasise enough how much I loooove to see my work embodied by dancers! Here, the incredible @danceplantcollective used my track 'Step' for their piece 'Entwined', a performance commissioned for New Zealand Maritime Museum. Got a wee snippet to share for ya xo
