Last weekend, we aired the final episode of Friendly Potential Radio. The broadcast started off a little bit after our party series began, with the first episode airing in April 2016. Since then, we have featured about 430 separate artists from over 40 countries, with the lion's share from Aotearoa. We're hugely grateful to all the artists and DJs who have submitted mixes, and the patience and faith of @95bfm , @__mouthfull__ , and @radioone91fm . To finish things off, Sam Harmony shared some weirdness and dance cuts, and Simon shared some long-standing favourites. It is up on our SoundCloud now. Be friendly to each other out there. See ya.

Stella Z and DJ Birdbath join us for the penultimate edition of Friendly Potential Radio. Stella Z recently released ‘In The Woods, Will Be Late' for @thirdplacerecords . It is an effervescent release written in the mountainous seaside province of Fujian, China. She also holds a residency on @threadsradio with her long-running Mars Weather Today show. In the first half, she shares a dreamy mix that veers between low slung rollers and transformational frequencies. After that, we hear @djbirdbath . Their Blue Tear EP came out in March on the @indexrecords imprint Appendix.Files. They have also recently relocated to Aotearoa from Manchester, and intend to move to Te Whanganui-a-Tara in August. They submit a leftfield dance-floor odyssey from their current base, in the northern reaches of Te Waipounamu. Listen again on our SoundCloud.

Over the past two weeks on FPR, we were joined by established heads and up-and-comers from around the motu. We kicked off FPR336 with Birkenthot, a Te Whanganui-a-Tara based artist with an all-encompassing sound. We closed with Herstot, a Tāmaki Makaurau-based interdisciplinary creative who has been deeply involved in the Aotearoa underground for over 20 years. Expect two hours of straight soundsystem pressure. We kicked off FPR337 with Indian born, Tāmaki Makaurau-based selector Dadlib. The Lowtide-affiliate explored culture and heritage, celebrating South Asian contributions to the dance music spectrum and beyond. Afterward, Kāi Tahu Ōtautahi-based artist Waewaexpress blends past and present with a high-octane journey. Hā ki roto, hā ki waho! Listen back on our SoundCloud.

One of our favourite discoveries of the past few years is IDS Recordings, the label run out of Arizona by Ryan Wick. They have a really wonderful discography, including Ryan's own productions and collaborations and works by other outernational artists. Ryan and his buddy Dalton Castile kick off FPR with a mix under the alias Something Steppers - a project which explores any and all things dub.  After that, it's the return of Fuueihou. Fuueihou runs the vinyl-only label Druzhba & is a founding member of the house duo Fuzoku. We hear a patient yet driving mix that really shows off his decade-and-a-bit in the trenches of underground electronic music. He shares a mix full of texture, colour, and unreleased cuts.  The show is up on our SoundCloud now. We'll be finishing up FPR's seven year run in a few weeks. 💚

SWIPE THROUGH ➡️ Beacon Festival returns tomorrow and we’re looking forward to seeing you all this weekend, if you’ve been sitting on the fence then now is the time to come on down. 🎉 Beacon Festival is this weekend. We think it is the best show we’ve ever produced, and we’ve had some killer parties - the lineup is fire, the festival experience is precisely what we thought was lacking in Aotearoa, and we’ve kept ticket prices as low as we could. Promoters don’t often show people what is behind the curtain. However, we’ve always tried to be fairly honest with people who come to our shows. Unfortunately, ticket sales for this and our last few shows have been slower than we anticipated, it’s been a tough time for everyone and we get that - we’re feeling it too. The party’s happening though, the weather is going to be beautiful, the artists are here - it’s real and it’s gonna be super sick. We really appreciate all the support you’ve shown us over the last 8 years and countless parties. It's been a wild and wonderful ride and we’ve had as much fun as you have. If you like what we do and you want to see it continue, grab a ticket and immerse yourself all weekend from beaconfestival.co.nz or a day ticket at the gate. That tells us you want to see more shows like this, and you’ll have a damn good time too. We’ve got a discount code to help make it a little easier - use “FRIENDS” at check-out, and we’ll see you on the wharf.

Benny Salvador is at the forefront of a new dance movement in Aotearoa. The Te Whanganui-a-Tara based artist has a reputation for refined and exploratory dancefloor odysseys, driven by his innate curiosity and a childhood surrounded by music. He also an irrepressible force in the studio, with a wicked run of EPs out on his own imprint Aunty Records, features on compilations by Antal and Juke Bounce Werk, and a grab-bag of unreleased cuts and edits ready to be unleashed at every show. He takes over Friendly Potential Radio in anticipation of his appearance at Beacon Festival in Tāmaki Makaurau this weekend. From Benny: I had heaps of fun sitting around the house with my dad picking through some of his and my faves and messing around dubbing them out with my delay pedals haha. Excuse the delay feedback mishaps and some record skips! Listen back on our SoundCloud 🫶

This week on FPR, we showcase some more artists playing at @beacon.festival on the 18th and 19th of March. To open, we hear from Awa, a core component of the Te Whanganui-a-Tara underground. Their radio and club workouts are unique and highly imaginative expressions of their cultural identity, as they fuse indigenous waiata with dance music. Throughout the process of putting together this mix, they were inspired by a whakataukī: Māku te ra e tō ana, Kei a koe te urunga ake o te rā (Let mine be the setting sun, Yours is the dawning of a new day). To close, we hear from local visionary Michael Logie. The mind behind F In Math recently released his synth-heavy debut EP FKD Night. The release is a mini-masterpiece, drawn from a chaotic swarm of 1000 demos that evolved out of his time with longtime collaborator SILICON. He shares a mix that is evenly split between his favourite parts of his favourite early 2000s electronica, and bits and pieces of demos and remixes he's made over the years. Listen back via our SoundCloud.
